384kbps and 1Mbps ADSL getting upgraded?

Well assuming this rumour is actually true...
a) likely, although unbelievable
b) likely... for uncapped, that is. Not for the line itself.
 
I think if telkom was to upgrade the 384kbps people, it will be upgraded to 512kbps and not 1mbps. What will happen to people who have uncapped 384kbps, will these accounts be upgraded to 1mbps at no cost?

Well, if Telkom were to upgrade 384, why not 1024? They did after all upgrade 512 to 1024 [for free].

Because the 384 guys pay peanuts for their ADSL compared to the 4/10meg guys. I'd actually be irritated if 384 got upgraded to 1meg considering what I'm paying for my 6meg.

May be peanuts to you but it's expensive to others.

I don't think that's true at all...

for 384kbps access you pay somewhere in the region of R150 {I think}
for 1024kbps access you pay R289
for 4096kbps+ you pay R413 {I think}

So for almost 10 times the speed at minimum 4096kbps you pay not even three times as much... In fact I would say the 384kbps users pay {for the value of what they get} the most of all.

That's only line rental. Add a 10Mb uncapped account to that and you're looking at R2k a month

That's true but I just moved from 384kbps to 1mbps and I obviously am not representative of all 384kbps users but back then I was paying R150 {or so} line rental and R318 for openweb gold uncapped 384kbps {Total R468}. Now I am paying R289 for line rental and R329 for openweb uncapped gold 1mbps {Total R618}. So for not even half of what I was paying extra I am getting over 2.6 the speeds and available data that I can download a month.

And all this scales upwards as well, for line rental {4mbps @ R413} and openweb uncapped gold {4mbps @ R768} you get four times the speed of the 1mbps at R 1181 {total} not even twice what I am paying now and not even 3 times what I was paying for 384kbps but at over ten times the speeds {of the 384kbps}, obviously this is even better for 10mbps.

Now there is obviously something to be said for account admin, support costs for more clients exct. exct. but to suggest that the higher speeds DSL users are somehow getting the raw end of the deal is disingenuous at best. Ultimately the lower tier DSL subscribers subsidize the higher tier far more than vice versa and that was really all I was trying to say...

On a interesting note I see openweb have a 2mbps account available on their website {maybe it's been their a while??} but it certainly does lend credence to these rumours.

So other people can't have nice things because it will upset you, and you would prefer Telkom rather not do something to better the state of internet in this country?

As MattyW correctly pointed out, the "moms and pops" on 384 have been subsidising the higher end users for many years...

That's normal? Buying product in small quantities (small containers) are normally more expensive than buying in bulk (larger containers) as the overheads and base costs remains about the same in both cases.

Incorrect analogy. The base price for bandwidth usage (ADSL rental) is not the same. POTS rental (Telkom tax) is the same.

That's actually what I mean. Total cost of service. Who knows, I am to tired to think and cant sleep.

It shows two speeds. One is what you have, the other is the maximum available on the specific DSLAM to which you are currently connected. This does not mean that it is the maximum for your exchange as there could be multiple DSLAMs in your exchange. Hence Yuu's post...

Any ideas of what an uncapped 2Mbps account would go for? R199 via MWEB on my 1meg account. Wondering if I'd need to upgrade :)
