3G Hardware: Customize your Huawei E220, etc

Since we still don't have a section dedicated to 3G broadband hardware, I've been agonizing over which section to post this in. Eventually, I've decided to post this in the Vodacom forum, as it was here that the topic was first raised.

After some speculation here and here, I've managed to experiment with replacing the CD-ROM image that the Huawei E220 presents to one's PC and the result are now available here.

Before stabbing the link, I urge you to consider that the software available there is for educational purposes only, and that using it on your own hardware may void all warranties, and that you should not try this at home.

E220 ginngs huawei UTPS flash

Hi,

Hope ginngs is still around here somewhere.

I have a E220 flashed with the latest firmware (11.117.10) and want to use it with my 8ta sim im getting next week (15gb datamax from telkom). It is however vodacom branded and still have vodacoms sucky dashbard software. Your MDMA tool is awesome and I want to flash it to the device along with either huawei's generic dash or 8ta's dash. I will mostly be using the MDMA tool though.

Is that guide still up to date? It seems a little bit complicated but I am sure I can get it to work. Also should I add the drivers found here to the iso?

Ok. Got an .iso with drivers and the mdma app + an autorun, downloaded all the files/apps and got a .exe of the latest UTPS.

Now im stuck on how to use reshacker and hwiso2bin to write everything to the e220

Glad to hear it still works! This reminds me I should upload the version that works with other modems besides the E220, although you can find it as part of 'Huawei Dashboard Tool'.

And do you know of any way to run USSD's if your USB modem (My e220 in this case) is connected to a 3G router via USB.

Currently the best way is to run the USSD's throught my newly installed MDMA . Usually had to take out the sim.

The header that hwiso2bin creates needs to be slightly different for modems other than the E220.

AFAIK, this is only possible with MikroTik routers.

Assumed the same. But 8ta has a link on their web. When you connect through the sim and you click on it, it shows you you usage + airtime + data etc. You can also top up from there - This link works for me, not sure if its specific to my number though. So I can check everything even if the Modem goes through a router

Last question... MDMA doesn't support sms'es yet that correct?

Oh and yea.. Thanks a lot for all the guides and programs and stuff... Really Really Awesome!! I renamed everything and made an autorun with new icon that works perfectly.

Maybe we should upload it along with huawei's latest firmware update somewhere on mybb? Ofc I can email it for you first so that you can check whether my work is acceptable

Correct, but it will come out with popup window notifying that SMS arrived.

What operating system is on the new computer?
What firmware revision does your E220 have?
Does it show up as a CD-ROM device?
Have you tried installing the drivers?

Tried everything and didn't work, got quite accustomed to the software and procedures. Decided to flash huawei generic dashboard as 8ta has an online data and airtime checker and I need an sms function. Will keep MDMA on my desktop for when I need to run USSD codes.

Got my DataMAX 15GB simcard today, will hopefully be activted tomorrow (Waiting for RICA).
