Edge, 3G, hardware or software?

Am I correct in saying that an Edge phone cannot be upgraded to 3G by downloading the software?
They are hardware radios and therefore the electronics differ.
My pal recons it can be downloaded and I want to prove him wrong.
We talking BB 8520 here. It only has Edge.

Hardware...and if I am not mistaken the same will apply for LTE...it is new hardware too...so you cant download a app to make your phone LTE either.
