3G on Virgin - Honestly, I don't think it will ever happen.

I must say, I am not a big fan of Virgin Mobile and the only reason I remain with them are their free sms.

However, today for the first time I heard good news from the company. Finally they are introducing 3G network coverage, it was supposed to go live 1 July but there were some problems. But they should be sorted out soon.

Still 60ct but I wouldn't be surprised if that changed once they introduce 3G. Let's wait and see

Great news!

Sorry guys...dont mean to invade your Virgin section...but was reading this out of curiosity. I dont understand why you guys are so excited about 60c/meg? That works out to R600.00 per GIG!!!! Vodacom, if you activate the 1Gig bundle, it works out to R289.00 or 28c/meg....and vodacom have now increased the bundle sizes so now you get 1.2gigs for the same price!!! And this is on the 3G/HSDPA network. Virgin only has EDGE.

Am I missing something? You guys know something I dont? I am really just curious.

Perhaps they prefer to not have to buy a gig of data.

oh ok. makes sense I guess. I just saw you guys wetting yourself because of the 60c/meg...and was like WTF??? lol...but yes, I guess if you only use data now and then then it makes sense.

Thanks alf. :-)

Well when you compare 60c a MB from Virgin to R2.00 a MB with Vodacom its a BIG difference don't you think?

Virgin getting 3G makes absolute sense since Virgin entirely uses CellC's infrastructure and CellC's is busy upgrading their network to a 3G network.

Virgin needs to drop the price to sub 50c/MB

The 60c/MB isn't so great anymore. MTN's 75 MB bundle is only R49. So that's 65c/MB for IB and OOB. It lasts for 60 days and you get much better speed than on Virgin.

Virgin is still better value unfortunately... For R150 I get a phone, unlimited sms and R150 airtime which give me 50Mb and something like 60 minutes of calls. Then I can sell the phone for R2000 and basically have a free contract for 13 months. So once Virgin gets 3G I'll be really happy!

it looks like its true. I just had a 3g signal for about an hour now.

Really! THey must be doing final tests now, where in SA are you based? My phone is EDGE only so can't test right now, getting a 3G phone this week however so will test and report in Cape Town

I'm based in PTA east. I ran Opera Mini and opened up a few websites, and it was really fast. At some stage I was running 3.5g, which is HSPA, till I got disconnected and my network reverted back to EDGE.
