Hi Everyone,

I am new to the 3G router world, and need some assistance.

I currently have a Vodafone K3772-Z that works on the 8.ta network fine. I've installed the Vodafone software, then created a dialup connection for using the internet via 8.ta. I then purchased the Tenda 3G611R+ so that I can create a wireless network at home. I installed the software that was given, and hopefully filled in all the details correctly, I can comminicate to the Tenda router fine, however I can't dialup to 8.ta. I've noticed that the 3G modem does not want to power up when plugged into the router, could this possibly mean that the modem is not recognised by the router?

Thanx.

I had similar problems with both Intellinet and Mr3420. It seems (like the K4510-z) that this modem is not compatible with 3g routers

So perhaps someone can help to flash compatible Huawei firmware to the modem ... anyone ... anyone ,,, anyone ...

-Z in the model number means it was manufactured by ZTE. I don't think it is possible to flash a Huawei firmware onto a ZTE modem.

Tenda firmware is hard to modify if even possible.
That Tenda worked fine with my Huawei e367.(So if you replace your current modem you know which one will work)
Could you maybe post the log message of the router?
Did you setup using the LAN Cable and not wireless network at first?
Did you also check the tenda website if it supports the modem?

Thanx for the info everyone. Looks like it definately is a compatability issue. I used an older Vodafone modem and it connected fine. So looks like it doesn't support some of the newer ZTE modems. Does anyone know where I can get a cheap E220 or another Huawei modem, just want to setup a basic connection at home?

That modem will not work. I had a Mecer 3G modem and it was not recognised. Rather get a Huawei, they are all 100% compatible.

There are quite a few on Gumtree. Take along a laptop so you can test it

Thanx, was also informed that all the Huawei modems should be fine. Do you think it's worth it to get a 14/21mbps modem, or rather just stick with the standard 7mbps modems?

Maybe you don't need 21Mbps modem, but it is wise to have latest HSPA+ (even at speed 14Mbps). So far I haven't seen difference on 8ta (probably due to unstable network response), but with Cell C it made difference. Faster wake up, generally better browser experience.
Modems in question are E367 (R699), E353, E352, available from 8ta, MTN stores. The lowest price was at Edgars E353/2(?) as reported on this forum. All have an external antenna connector, handful if you need it in future.

Well, for those that might be interested....why not just buy a Vodafone R205 3G router? It is such a lekker little thing. Got myself one yesterday. You looking at about R950.00 cash...it has a battery so it is mobile and small enough to fit easy into your laptop bag. Supports HSPA + 21mbs also.

I've seen a new Huawei E352 for R299, is it worth they buy to be used on 8ta?

There is conflicting seller information:
Code:
VODACOM, MTN, CELL C, 8TA, VIRGIN ETC
Huawei E352U Modem Specifications
◦HSDPA/UMTS 1900/2100MHz
Because it is 1900MHz, not 900MHz, it is not compatible with Cell C. But it will work fine with all other networks (using 2100MHz band).
Modems E3xx series sold by 8ta and MTN are U2 version: UMTS 900/2100MHz

Thanx, will confirm with the seller the specs...

You best option here is to use a USB hub.

Connect your phone via the USB hub and then route any computer to the hub.

Firmware and compatibility can be a mission to resolve.

The seller confirmed that the specs he has are correct. So with this in mind, I just want to confirm that this modem will work fine for Vodacom, MTN & 8ta, however CellC will not work?

It will work with Cell C, but only 2G (not 3G). Be warned that 2G on Cell C sucks...

The Seller informed me later that the specs is as follows:
2G: 900/1800
3G: 900/1900/2100

So I'm assuming that it will work on all networks in 3G mode...I am going to mainly use the connection with 8ta, so I think I should be fine...Hopefully 8ta don't stop selling their R149 a month special :)
