Hi,

Anyone else noticed this, I've been having syncing issues on my 4 meg line, then last night it synced at 3072down and 512up (Just after I logged a fault with Telkom DSL) , Ever since I've had the line it's always been 4096down and 384up. Been having the syncing issues over the last 7 days - telkoms up to something? I connect to the Olivedale exchange as far as I know.

They are probably tinkering with the DSLAM settings, the other thing that you need to consider, and you might know this ! that you will never achieve these rates as the BRAS higher Upstream controls bandwidth on a session layer.

THe marconi router doesn't seem to show that level of detail. This is what it can give me:
Name Value
Driver Version 1.61
APIVersion GS_API_540_SR8_Marv118-12-AMD
Firmware Version E.38.2.27
Dsp Version 0x000000c1
Connected true
Operational Mode G.Dmt
State Showtime
Watchdog 0x00000053
Operation Progress 0x000000ad
Last Failed 0x0000006b
Tx Bit Rate 512000
Rx Bit Rate 3072000
Rx ATTNDR 0
Tx Cell Rate 1207
Rx Cell Rate 7245
Overall Failure 0
INPup 0.0
INPdown 0.0

Eish. Don't have that router so I don't know, and all I had to offer was comparing your line stats to what the "average" figures are.

Maybe phone them and ask them to do a line test or something?

Also, you say you are now at 512Kbps upstream - did you request that upgrade via photonman on this forum, or was this done by Telkom? If Telkom did it, then maybe they messed something up while changing your profile... (or are tinkering, as !!DV!! suggested)?

No request at all, just upgraded to 512up like magic - but it's a downgrade 4meg to 3meg

Interesting. So, as per this article: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/ADSL/3934.html

Your upstream speed has been increased. However, it seems to have caused a downgrade in your downstream, which I don't understand (my downstream attenuation and noise margin did not change when my upstream speed was increased).

Looks like you will have to call Telkom up and find out what the heck they are doing.

Also, have you tested your speed at www.speedtest.net ?

Its not too bad 3072 down but I guess you are paying for 4Mbps so thats what you should get

unfortunately Telkom indemnify themselves from any legal ramifications by rather refering to 4mbit lines as an 'up to 4mbit' service. They provide no guarantee of an actual 4mbit sync rate, and therefore are reluctant to deal with clients who phone in and say there line isn't actually syncing at 4mbit.

I had a problem a while back where I had 4mbit speeds since the 'trial' began, however all of a sudden my line started syncing at a much lower rate. I called them and asked them to take a look, but they gave me the usual rubbish that it's an 'up to 4mbit' service and it's dependant on the line quality. It took a lot of e-mails and a rant on hellopeter to finally get some service, and after a while they realised that they had some noise/other problems at the dslam, which they then fixed and let me know. I would suggest doing the same, otherwise they won't really look into the situation :)

What should i sync at?

My Stats Are:

ADSL Link |Downstream|Upstream|
Connection Speed |2048 kbps |512 kbps|
Line Attenuation |61.0 db |31.5 db |
Noise Margin |5.9 db |10.0 db |

what should i sync at? the max stable sync?

im unhappy with my 2048 speed because when i first took it they said i will sync at 4mb now they saying a whole load of crap
