Hey. Heard from a guy that works for telkom that they are going to announce a 40% drop on all ADSL prices on monday(mind you he was pissed when he told me). 192k is falling away and 384k is gonna be the price of 192k. Also they are busy installing 10mb fibre-to-curb which will be availible this year. Can anyone confirm this?

Dont think anyone can... but the first part does sound rather likley. 192kb falling away is what was expected around here, a 40% price drop also sounds rather large and the 10mb is a bit unbelievable for this year.

All could be true, but i doubt most of it. what kind of cap would they have on a 10mb line anyway? And how will they price that in line with thier current model, even with 40% off?

Doubtful.

I find the fact that anyone working at the beast is told anything unlikely as well.

But, we can hope.

Haaa

if they drop prices, it would all be relative...
40% reduction... of what portion of the exorbitant fees we are paying?

I don't see the Telkom activity required for this around the distro boxes etc. I don't see reels of cable being unrolled and pulled below the surface.

I'm afraid, but it seems to be nothing but drunken drivel.

Sounds typical Telkom. They will of course drop the 192 kbps because its price would've been lower than ISDN.

Could really be true?

Well I know for a fact that the UOVS just got a brand spanking new 10mb line. All the roads around the place have been dug up to lay it. (Nice and thick green cable ooohhhh...) So I guess he can't be that far off? I think it coincides nicely with the new tarrifs anouncements in june.

Ja I know here in Bloemfontein Telkom is doing ALOT of digging all over the place. They are laying these green pipes all over the place. My guess is that its to shorten the last mile wire to under 1.5KM.

Pfffft, the last time Telkom announced price cuts my 30GB account went from R200, to R680, to R1800. Have no doubt, things can only get worse.

The speeds will go up because Telkom needs to support its services push. It can't run IPTV on the network speeds it has at the moment so it needs to create a faster network. The 10Mb is most likely going to be to the street distribution box (or the next generation of it) and then it can run ADSL2+ to the house because the loop length will be short enough.
The higher speeds won't have caps because you won't get normal internet access with them, just specific services such as VoIP or IPTV which will be billed separately.

If the 384 kbps is currently R359 per month then 40% off that means it will be R215? Not bad, if true. But yes, the ISP portion will become more dominant.

It will make sense.. they have throttled down 192 speeds to 20 kBs over the last month or so. Now they increase them to where they were before do a big whoo haa about dropping of prices yet 192 users are exactly where they were before the drop in speeds. Other adsl users may benefit but the bulk of adsl accounts are 192 accounts so I imagine the impact of the price drop will be for less significant that 40% on their revenues...

I'm hesitant to believe this. One of my contacts at Telkom told me that I'd be seeing a price drop within the week... but he told me this about a month ago. So I'm inclined to think there're a few rumours going round the Telkom block
