42" LG LED vs 40" Sammy

You were duped by the usual charlatans tricks. Bright shop lighting leads to judging by brightness. Brightness =/= PQ. This is why I told you it is crucial not to judge on bright showroom floors. Also you don't know the settings used.

Second duping is judging from aisle viewing distances. LCD appears crisper up close although FHD plasma should be as crisp, just a bit "fuzzy".

Np when at viewing distance.

IOW when judging TVs, judge in similar lighting conditions and viewing distance. Otherwise you will walk out with an "LED TV" (no such thing lol) and be disappointed once you're home because it doesn't look like it did in store (torch mode, 100% brightness/contrast which is fail).

I dunno hey, if you have 2m viewing distance 51" is great. People tend to always want bigger. You get used to it after a week. ;)

Absolutely, I mean I cannot notice fuzziness from 1m on a PS51D550 displaying a PC desktop/XBMC. Really shouldn't be a problem. :)
 
Thanks very much. I do however have one last question if you don't mind. Why don't you ever reccommend the LG plasmas? I like their 3D technology more because the active 3D makes me want to vomit and I get headache after 10sec but not with the passive 3D. Are there any LG plasmas worth looking at? 55" maybe?

From beyond 1m you wont be able to perceive the dithering (mosquito noise) but ultimately from my experience the plasma wont match the razor sharp clarity/focus of gloss screen LEDs like the LM5800. This is due both to the absence of the dithering and the better bright level contrast of the LED, as plasmas aint that good at showing lots of bright whites.

LG's FPR passive 3D technology is only available on the LED models. Their plasmas are also active 3D.

Unfortunately you'll pay a huge premium for a 55" LED, plasmas are definitely better at the screen size vs price equation.

Yeah I understand that but most of my viewing will be in SD, with only about 15% BR Rip movies, that's why I thought it would be better to go plasma.

Then shouldn't be that bad (on both Plasma & LED) since the TV will be receiving a 1080p 24/60 signal with all upscaling happening on the HTPC (FFDShow does a pretty decent job).

Did not know such a app exists thanks. But now my decision is even harder... Will that app / utility work on linux?

Not an app, rather a codec library that many (open source) media players are based on.

Definitely better for SD. Much better bang for buck overall, with superior picture quality under dimmer conditions than entry - mid LCD. No brainer. :)

Samsung plasmas have better out the box performance, especially on Movie Mode (closest to calibration). No real reason I mention them more than LG.
 
So thanks to a promotion at House and Home, we acquired a 46EH6030 last night for R8,799. Took me an hour to unpack, assemble and rearrange the entertainment bits. Holy Smoke, the thing is MASSIVE! An hour's playing around left me with just one little issue: whilst playing an Xbox flight-game with lots of skies and clouds, I noticed some grey-ish patches in the 4 corners of the screen. Each seems roughly 3cmX3cm. Of course, the missus isn't too bothered since one tends to concentrate on the center of the screen. But I'm paranoid about having a defective unit (of course).

Seems that such dark patches may just be inherent in some back-lit LED screens. I'll do some testing with all-white and all-black JPG files this afternoon, and perhaps visit the store with the same files to compare.

Let us know how that goes. Might want to do it at night when it's darker.

How are you finding the TV?
Thinking of getting the Samsung 40" 3D Full HD LED TV NON-SMART UA40EH6030 R6999 with HD PVR & Walka 7
 
Between the 40" and the 46" SAMSUNG 46" (117cm) Smart Full HD Slim LED TV UA46ES5600 for R6999
Any advice on either?
