Technically, nothing is increasing in speed. It's the amount of packets of data that can be sent at the same time that's increased, although the speed at which the packets travel pretty much stays the same. So in reality, more packets being sent at the same time, means more congestion. What we'll always need is more capacity, which in turn increases the amount of packets that can be sent and that in turn increases the speed at which data is complied/created/recreated on the receiving side.

surely Vodacom and Cell C must now start thinking about competitive uncapped models????? Otherwise these speeds actually mean nothing.....

I don't understand how they can keep increasing speeds without doing anything about data bundle prices? These speeds are pointless without being able to do much with them.

Yes - it's not just a switch they can flick to upgrade speeds at will - it takes months to physically upgrade hardware on towers.

You do realise that this has increased the average broadband throughput? Vodacom have also dropped their broadband pricing aggressively.

Yes - the modems are available and is now bundled with Vodacom contracts. Supers both 900MHz and 2100Mhz, so will work with Cell C and Vodacom

As you know geography and area (and 'friendly' neighbors) are problematic in your area. But something is planned.
To answer some of the questions posted above:
Why the 42/43 thing?: 2 x 21.6 is actually 43.2.
Coverage?: There are more than a 1000 of the towers active and rolling fast, expect the number to double by next month.
There are already 2600 21.6 towers (many more than others networks) but many of the 4300+ towers will go straight to 43.2, bypassing 21.6.
So coverage is still in specific areas, but growing rapidly.
Modems?: You need a 43Mb/s modem, the current model is the K6405. These are in the shops, but not all shops might have received them yet. It's included on 1GB bundles up (not the promo) or you can buy it outright.
Speeds?: We showed peak speeds of 38Mb/s off a normal tower, but again the idea is to double capacity. 'Practical' peak speeds are probably closer to 20Mb/s with averages just under 10Mb/s.
BTW, The networking hardware is fully 86.6Mb/s capable. I know what Santa is bringing me!

100%, it's been well communicated we're upgrading for a while now. But we wanted substantial coverage and enough modems before making it commercially available.
As the Cell C supporters pointed out in some of the previous threads I mentioned the 43 rollout, what's the use to announce 1 or 2 towers, in a remote place with no modems in stock?
More than a 1000 active towers with many thousands of modems in stock probably counts as commercially ready.

Can someone with the technical knowledge explain to me how this will improve voice and Blackberry or if it will at all?
Has Vodacom given up on voice?
Its all well and good having fast internet but it seems that the voice network and BB in particular are in a complete mess.

Must be location - I don't have a problem on my BB, or any problem with voice communication.
