43Mbps HSPA+ milestone for Vodacom

Coverage?: There are more than a 1000 of the towers active and rolling fast, expect the number to double by next month.

There are already 2600 21.6 towers (many more than others networks) but many of the 4300+ towers will go straight to 43.2, bypassing 21.6.

So coverage is still in specific areas, but growing rapidly.

Modems?: You need a 43Mb/s modem, the current model is the K6405. These are in the shops, but not all shops might have received them yet. It's included on 1GB bundles up (not the promo) or you can buy it outright.

Speeds?: We showed peak speeds of 38Mb/s off a normal tower, but again the idea is to double capacity. 'Practical' peak speeds are probably closer to 20Mb/s with averages just under 10Mb/s.

BTW, The networking hardware is fully 86.6Mb/s capable. I know what Santa is bringing me! ;)

Oh please post a coverage map... > 14mbs ONLY. Pretty please :)

LOL i can see Jannie sitting in his mansion with 10 laptops doing a speed tests every few minutes to get vodacom's average up hehe....

Pathetic really, why the hell do they up the speed so much in certain areas while I get only EDGE.... and really sucky edge at that. This is in Pretoria, so it's not like it's in some little town in the middle of nowhere.

If it's not fixed soon I'll just switch to MTN since they do actually cover my area with 3G.

a Few Questions (for VodaCom) :

1. Is the 43 Mbps speed only available on contract (24 months ?)
2. What is the cost (on contract, per month), does it include the price of the modem ?
3. Can we get a clear indication of coverage ?

Many thanks.

PS. Could not find a 43Mbps modem on : http://www.vodacom.co.za/vodacom/Deals/Broadband

Voda claims they can't drop prices because the network can't handle it but they boast insane speeds! Every person I've talked to would rather have a more reliable connection under 2Mbps at a cheaper price than these insane speeds which allow background downloads to kill your data in seconds! Does anyone even bother with market research or is it just about whose is bigger?

Sucks living in the outskirts of the city! We still don't have a stable 3.6Mbps reception in Soweto! Always last in the chain :(

Okay okay, stop with the speed upgrade.. Now reduce the prices. What good is high speed with @ the very HIGH PRICE?

Now if they would just stop been greedy and up the data cap as per CellC prepaid offer. ... then we can talk, else shove the speed!

and now starts the ... mobile internet speed war? WTF what about the price war!!!

I can picture a meeting at Vodacom HQ, the mafia who control it sitting their in their lazy boys, plotting.
Lets offer the public a speed they can never and will never achieve.
We keep the prices the same hey lets even try increase the price, we will just get our advertising guys to word it nicely.
They think they will get the speed but meanwhile we will just continue raping them. muuahahahah

This makes no sense - to offer higher speeds but leave the bandwidth pricing as is.

Otherwise you'll have to go to prepaid to prevent insane OOB bills. Contract owners will have to be very, very careful with what they do. We can expect more people to make a big boo-boo with insane OOB billing.

Best is to vote with your wallet and go over to CellC. The more people defect, the quicker they'll have to drop their pricing to keep their existing customers.

VODACOM HQ
No we cannot lower prices of data! wtf are you mad? than everyone will want to use fast internet and end up like Cell C on the last night of the month. Here is our plan lower the price on Contracts! Daddies little helper, so people can give us a stable income to grow our network mahah bigger network, more speed Jimmy!

CELL HQ
Sir, the network seems to be overloaded.
What are you mad? We spent all our money poking the face of voda there no way im going boast capacity now? first they want us to change the data bundle rule! 2 data bundles are enough i say!!! anyways I forgot how to change it

MTN HQ
We cannot give up! the people will come back ,say the towers have 100MB/s! ha!
Sir thats LTE
Oh whatever it is get it, get me some money, and find me some other African country we can start a network in!

Neotel

Who waits for 30 days for a house phone anyway ....(cut) ...im so high right now wow

Telkom
HAHA 31MB/s id show them....wait we still using copper DAMIT!

8ta
Dam they said 7.2MB/s is the hit, now we cant put our freaken 8ta simcards onto our own network!Just tell them about our amazing deals!

Sentech
Im back baby!!!

You do realise that this has increased the average broadband throughput? Vodacom have also dropped their broadband pricing aggressively.

I will be perfectly happy with 3.6 rather than 43Mbps. Sorry, I missed the announcement of "aggressively dropped broadband pricing", 2.3Gb still costs R389. (No, I am NOT interested in 2Gb available when I'm sleeping.)
