48÷2 (9+3) argument

1/2(9+3) = (9+3)/2

If you're saying that that is half times (9+3) then your're correct. If it is 1 divided by 2 into (9+3) then you're not.

I'm saying
1/2(9+3) = 0.5(9+3) = (4.5+1.5) = 6

hence in the original question, it might as well have been written as
(48)(1÷2 (9+3)) = (48)(6) = 228
since

1÷2 (9+3) = 1/2 * (9+3)/1....

etc etc

my question to you would be:

what is sinπ(0.5) be equal to according to you?

according to me it is (0)(0.5) = 0 and not sin(π/2) = 1.
The same rule applies to fractions, since a fraction has two algorithms, one in the numerator and one in the denominator.

The "sin" bit would take precedence over anything else, including brackets. So it would be (0)(0.5) = 0.
Any person that has done maths though would write it out like this: 0.5sinπ

the exact same rule applies to a fraction. it is ideal to write it 0.5sinπ, however when it comes to derivatives of say sin(x^2) and when following the chain rule I usually do the outside then inside first, hence cos(x^2)*2x, simply because that is how my mind works, however 2xcos(x^2) would be the exact same thing.

anyways we seem to agree that an algorithm should take preference, but not the algorithm of a fraction, I'm saying that the rules state one needs to be consequent in mathematics, and algorithms take priorities over brackets.
 
A fraction is just a number like any other. Don't know what you're going on about. 48÷2 is not a fraction anyway.

a fraction itself is a function

y = x/y..... hence it has an algorithm to represent a decimal value, and yes 48/2 is a fraction,

thus by saying sinpi(0.5) = 0 then 1/2(9+3) = 6 :), if not then you are not consequent and don't understand the 'voorkeur van bewerking' (BIDMAS?)

48/2(9+3)
= 48/2(12)
=48(0.5)(12)
=48(6)
- 228

maklik! rules state you have to do algorithms and brackets first,
a fraction has three
1) the numerator
2) the denominator
3) the numerator divided by the denominator

one may not use a number outside an algorithm before solving the algorithm first!
or else sinpi*0.5 would not be equal to zero.

That post is wrongly read period. yes the paranthesis of the brackets take priority HOWEVER it is 0.5 that you are multiplying into the brackets and not 2...

/2 = 0.5 ..... the reason being that you can put infinite factors of '1' before it and my answer should remain the same, any number X1 = that number

Hence 48/2(9+3) = 48(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)/2(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(9+3)
= 48(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(0.5)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(1)(6)

/2 is the number and not 2 itself BECAUSE 2 is in the algorithim of the denominator in order to get it out the algorithim has to be solved FIRST hence 1/2 must be converted to 0.5 BEFORE it can be multiplied into the brackets,


=228

a term in mathematics can ONLY be separated by a plus and minus...

288 and 2 are legitimate answers and how you get to either depends on your teaching.. The old school way =288 but if you ask a grade 5 or anyone thats matriculated with the past ~ 10 years? they'll most likely get 2..

I still hold that your interpretation is wrong, there is a convention in mathematics to remove ambiguity, if you follow your ... terms /Bidmos rules then you can't go wrong.
