48÷2 (9+3) argument

Ok first off what I want to say is

these listed below all mean the same thing:
2(9+3) = 2.(9+3) = 2x(9+3) = 2*(9+3)

I disagree.

2.(9+3) , 2x(9+3) , 2*(9+3) all equal 2x1(9+3) right?

2(9+3) however is not the same as the 2 here is replacing the 1 in the above. Thus in my opinion forming part of the brackets.

The answer then will be 2 following BODMAS. As it is part of the brackets.

The others will be apart from the brackets and that's why you get 288.

The Casio fx-82ES PLUS gets both answers. 2 by using the exact equation in the title and 288 by using a x sign.

This is what me and a few other have been arguing, but people don't understand it... sigh
 
I think it's what we were taught in school wasn't it? I might not do what-what engineering maths like the other guy but I do agree with Casio over Google.

I also want to add my Sharp EL-738 shows the same.

That is indeed the case. The question is purposefully ambiguous and should have been stated as either 48 / (2(9+3)) or (48 / 2) * (9+3). It's all a prank I tell you!!

<but I still say the answer is 2 :p>
 
Factorization & Simplification
48÷2(9+3)
=9(48÷2) + 3(48÷2)
=9x24 + 3x24
=24(9+3)
=24x12
=288

To end up with an answer of 2 you would have had to say:

48÷2(9+3)
=48÷((2x9)+(2x3)) (incorrect step, see below)
=48÷(18+6)
=48÷24
=2

A÷B(C+D) = C(A÷B)+D(A÷B)
A÷B(C+D) NOT= A÷(BC+BD)
A÷B(C+D) NOT= A÷BC÷BD
A+B(C+D) = A+BC+BD

48 / 2(9+3)
First we must do division so we simplify
48/2 (9+3)
24(9+3)
Next in BODMAS is multiplication
24X (9+3) = (216+72)
finally your Addition
216+72= 288

You can't just multiply the 2 into the brackets, the whole 48/2 must be multiplied into the brackets.

Did we not learn in std6: 2x3=2(3)=2.3


Work out the what's inside the brackets first.

48÷2(9+3)
=48÷2(12)
=48÷2x12
=24X12 (Left to right)
=288

Ahh but you see there lies the argument, due to the multiplier not being explicitly defined, the implied 2 multiplication forms part of the bracket for initial consideration.

Mathematically, it's ambiguous and dangerous.
 
Dude, Standard 6 was many moons ago for me, 1989, thats why I redid my High School maths at UNISA. And yes I do agree the real number in front of the parenthesis implies multiplication but immediately to the values inside the parenthesis/brackets.

(The reason why I redid my maths was because I sucked at geometry but loved algebra)

okay im with you. yes i know the flaming starts here :). im of the opion that the 2 is part of the bracket. but possibly stating the question more correctly is
48÷2 (9+3)
9 = y
3 = z

answer =x

x = 48/2(y+z)
x = 48/(2y + 2z)
x = 48/(2(9) + 2(3))
x = 48/(18 + 6)
x = 48/24
x = 2
