is a line attenuation of 49db downstream the problem of my often disconnects?

I had ongoing problem and it got worse when line was sync at 4mbps, it will drop connection often.

I had phone call from a Telkom Engineer today giving me below info regarding my problem: Direct quoted from out phone conversation:

" My DSL was downgraded to sync now at 2Mbps speed, to see if I get stable connection.
My line attenuation staying at 49db downstream, the Telkom Engineer says that it is acceptable quality because I am 3.6 km from sub exchange location.
Telkom Engineer says replacing of copper lines will only happen when Telkom fibre project happen, but he has no date when my area will be upgraded in Durbanville.

Telkom Engineer says the problem is my ISP(CyberSmart) and I must change ISP because when my connection drop my router stay on and DSL light stay solid. My internet connection light go off, the router DSL light do not go off and he says that shows problem is with my ISP.

Telkom Engineer says my ISP hide behind Telkom as the problem but the actual problem is at CyberSmart ISP.

He says if I switch to Telkom as my ISP the problem will go away."

Attached is survey I did on facebook between my friends. and screen shot they send me to compare DSL line attenuation quality.

Attenuation isn't the problem, it's your noise margin.

Ok then test it with these log in details

Username: guest@telkomadsl
pass: guest

Also set your ADSL mode to ADSL not Auto/ADSL2/ADSL2+

If your router still remains connected to the exchange i.e. syncs then he is right generally speaking. Log onto your router and check your logs as to why its not connecting to your ISP - otherwise try a guset/trail account from another isp as a test.

DSL can operate at 49db @ 2mbps - what is your SNR?

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

Although at 2mbps that isn't a great attenuation level.

Guys thanks for quick and great info.

I was hoping to stay on 4mbps, but then the disconnects happens more often.
I see my noise is 11.9 db, is this acceptable?

I will use the quest dsl username from telkom and see if connection problem go away and i will get trial account from mweb or telkom for month to monitor link quality.

my netgear router only have setting for DSL = auto/ADSL2/ADSL2+
I will see if it can set to ADSL only.

When I was using a tplink and a billion routers the connection drops were worse.

Thanks again for help and feedback!

Netgears act fairly well far away from the exchange in comparison to other brands.

11.9 should be ok but again it isn't great.

I get 11.8db syncing at 7mbps and mine is generally pretty stable - I may get a DC once a week with my Netgear - my Cisco or DLink wont even last a few hours before it DCs.

You and your friend with the DGN2200 must update the routers firmware.

will update my firmware tonight thanks for spotting it.

the end to my sad internet quality, Afrihost will give trial 1 month dsl connection, telkom says they do not give trial periods.

Telkom dropped my line speed to 2mbps and last 4 days my connection is stable and slow.

I found a telkom engineer at one of the other sub exchanges near my house and he said it is not possible to change me to another or closer exchange in my area because the cables cannot be polled from my house else where.

I remember hearing the cybersmart and other telkom engineers on phone conversations in past tell me yes they must move me to another exchange closer or with open ports, BUT if the telkom engineer i found in the street says it is not possible to pull cables how will they change me to another sub exchange ?
