71% ADSL Price Decrease Reasonable

well let's hear it for Sarah Truen and Genesis - not sure how the figures were arrived at but the general principle makes more than a lot of sense

unfortunately those who need to be listening went selectively deaf a long time ago

I can see Telkom dropping the price by 71% .. then increasing it by 80%... and then doing a press statement saying "Telkom drops prices by 71%" ... and selectively forget to mention the increase.

Hi Dominic

I will try to get permission to publish her presentation. This figure is based on a great deal of research and solid arguments. I hope to invite Ms. Truen to our conference later this year as well to shed some light on the pricing issue.

Regards,

RPM

R190.00 without "line rental" would be perfect for 512K. There'd be tonnes of people queuing up to get ADSL for that price. I really need broadband at home coz I constantly need access to it for varsity things and it's not fair that I have to dialup for like 5 minutes and then disconnect coz I want to keep the phone bill low. At the current prices theres no way I can get ADSL as a student. R190 is definitely in my price range though..

Telkom's waitlist to get adsl is at least 1 month some areas and 2 months+ in others. They do not have the capacity to work faster and they're not willing to invest money to improve the process. How can we ever expect them cut their price by 70%?

Let's not even go into their failing networks...

One of the problems I can see with Telkom adopting this sort of price decrease is that they'll never be able to deal with the extra load. They barely keep up with the current ordering for ADSL (due more to incompetence than lack of resources) so can you imagine how long the wait would be if 2.6 million people suddenly wanted it?

With over 80% of local households earning less that R 50 000 per month these drastic reductions are needed to improve Internet and broadband penetration rates in South Africa.

Wow, I'm on my way back to SA - R50 000 per month ! :D

The big problem here is something that is related to getting the price to that level - massive uptake - as Telkom can't even handle a medium sized uptake of ADSL, how on earth could they cope with double or triple the numbers of new installations?

Well, easy I guess, unbundle the local loop ! :D

Shouldn't that read : "With over 80% of local politicians earning more than R 50 000 per month"? :D

And why don't we have unlimited local access in SA..I don't get it. We pay so much but still are limited with local bandwidth...

Maybe they need to be outfitted with some hearing aids? Then we can put the volume to max and watch their little noses glow as we tell them that they need to reduce their prices... :D

article says 'per year'...so don't come back. We don't earn that much here

stay where you are, just download the internet for us and send on DVD :p

I know people who earn four times the R50 000 mentioned and won't touch ADSL because of the price. Especially when you have kids to put through school and varsity among other things

was going through my old books and came upon a book with cartoons from the 1980's and there is one in there with a picture of telkom you can make out its the complaints department and the lady is sitting there and says. "due to the popularity of this number, calls are now charged at R10 a minute"

amazing how much things have stayed the same isnt it.

Now there's an idea!

Someone invent some HUGE capacity storage device and sell the internet on a monthly subscription on high capacity drive. Delivered to your door...

Even one DVD would give us more than we get with the 3Gb Cap. All you have to do is sub to your fav sites...:D
