With all the talk going on about an 8 Mb DSL connection coming soon, here are some thoughts on it. While it is great having access to a fast, always on connection, it doesn't really help with bandwidth prices as they currently are. 3 gigabytes on an 8 Mb connection will be gone in literally minutes and then your internet connection is pretty much useless. To take full advantage of that type of connection, an unlimited and uncapped local and international DSL account would be best or should it be capped, at least 100 GB of bandwidth should be available.

Having an 8 Mb connection with 3 GB of bandwidth is like having a Learjet parked in your driveway, however you can only drive it on the highway at 60 km/h.

True uncapped ( no limits nor thresholds ) at a reasonable price wont be here soon. give it 2+ years at least.

Don't really care. As long as I'm uncapped when I'm at home ie: Non-working hours, I'm happy.

Also that may never happen as other countries round the world are considering bandwidth "limits" or restrictions that were traditionly uncapped. Make the best with what you got.

5 GB int and 30 GB local.

Streaming video should play better.
One good thing.

FYI, I saw this yesterday:

4096k ALL HOURS Uncapped @ R2899:

This one of a kind account offers all day internet access, at full 4096k speeds with no rate limits or thresholds.

I wonder if it's shaped? (Edit: Got confirmation from OpenWeb today: It is a semi-shaped Internet Solutions fibre connection!)

I highly doubt if youtube and some other video streams cannot go well on a 4meg how they will on an 8 meg line.

400kbs should be fine to stream almost anything yet we cannot even stream a youtube vid most of the time.

I cannot wait to see grabit hit 800kbs :D, although i did see grabit go at 3000kbs for 3 minutes once, holy cow did that move, still not sure how on earth it got that right, must mean telkom can go higher than 8 meg possibly.

Grabit works? Mine does nothing, the Grabs from U-tube etc does not show?

When are we going to get the 8MB lines, I though the lines could not handle those speeds

A telkom techie told me late October and i was informed of this not even a week ago. From my understanding if you can support 8mbit you will be bumped up to it like with the 1mb to 4mbit upgrade. Im looking forward to the "Ag no man!! my line can only synch at 7.45mbit, TELKOM YOU SUCK!!" threads

Telkom did finish the 8mb line trials a while back, though they said they didnt have sufficient backhaul to up everyone, so for those lucky enough to get 8Mbs (or 7,45MB lol), be greatfull....

Btw i think some people already hav upped line speeds here in Cape Town been hearing people connecting at 5.2MB and so on.... Not truly sure, but going to go have a look by these people. And some new telkom models register the line 8192kbps, although only sync at 4096Kbps (this i can confirm) so it likely we might see some upgrades soon.

If they do come out with 8Mb lines, then hopefully they drop 384 altogether, and keep the pricing structure the same, but bump everyone up a level. But then perhaps I'm an eternal optimist :)

I'd be happy if they drop the 384K and 512k lines, and replace it with 1mb and 4mb respectively, as for us 4mb peeps we could just b bumped up to 8mb, then i doubt anyone would complain about slow again.

I can stream almost anything from youtube on my 4 MEG line ?? ive been trying to find a vid that wont stream or something that will prove my internet connection is not so fast but nothing yet

im happy for now
