8ta: FAQs

I should think the problem is about vouchers loaded and then disappearing.
I loaded R50 and it immediately appeared on my account.
I handed over R50, the cashier typed in my cell no / amount.
Before she could hand me the receipt the SMS came through showing my new balance.
The full R50 was available.

The same with me, my balance showed correctly, until I actually came to use it. Then the operator says I never loaded a voucher (ever).

So how much does a SMS cost? It says send 5 sms messages first, THEN only do you get 50 FREE for the day. Now the question is, how much is 5 sms messages or rather how much is 1 sms message? I couldn't find it on the front page or deals, is it under prepaid?

ok from the web site under tarrif options of 8ta

SMS @ R0.50 anytime...

this might nail me

31 x 5 x 0.50 = R77.5 max for the month to send 155sms, 200 sms bundle would cost ~ R54 depending on the provider.

So the catch is sms :'(

Yes, but you have forgotten to add the 31 x 50 sms's you get after making the 5 per day.
So add another 1550 sms's to the 155.

Heck, 50 is a lot for me. I don't even send 100 in a month. So one could say it works out to R2.50 for unlimited sms during that day. Jikes, you could line up a few of these babies in modems if you want to spam the world. Works out to ~R0.045 per sms! Lowest I've seen for mass sms is round about R0.22?

Question:
When is 8ta going to (ab)use their "unique" relationship with telscum and launch 8ta branded 384k ADSL lines at R100 per month?
Although R99 would look a bit better. ;) ;)

I wish 8ta all the luck they can get. We always moan that there is no competition to Telkom in ADSL. Well there is no real competition to Vodacom and MTN in the cell industry and their prices are sky high. They drop the interconnect rates but has your calls become cheaper? Bring in the competition, it will cause the other big boys to keep on their toes. Maybe we can eventually all benefit

+1

Offering free phone calls to a landline would be considered anti-competitive in most countries. Not that I'm complaining.

I think you guys are missing the point. If the person is used to having a 100sms bundle which would cost only R35.00 is half the price of R77 (for 155). Currently 8ta's offer would cost for 155 sms minimum required to be sent before it starts to becomes cheaper.

I currently get 15 free sms + 100sms bundle vs 115 @ R0.50 = R57 + you must pay their so called compulsory value added services like called ID @ R8.50 + Itemized Billing @ R17.

a contract of R130 p/m will actually equate to R233 p/m in reality, it will become even more expensive if you happen to send a 100 sms per day like American kids... because there are no sms bundles to bolt on.

I personally don't send on average more than 3 sms a day, so a person like me will not save. It will actually be worse for me. The younger generation that is fond of sending a sms for every thought popping in their head might be appealing. It will only be cheaper for me when I would perhaps do a bulk sms in christmas, which would probably cause telkom's servers to crash anyway...

Is it possible in the future to get one of your telkom closer plans on heita mobile.

Completely understand what you are saying. SMS Bundles is to be launched soon. They have included SMS,MMS and Data bundles in the small 8.ta booklet you get with a new 8.ta sim.

8ta only gets me EDGE speeds (325kb/sec) whereas if I plug in a Vodafone SIM card, I immediately get 3.6mb sec. On enquiring with 8ta, I am told (1) we only provide 3G, not HSDPA, (2) you bought a cheap data bundle and they are slower, (3) you have no MTN coverage.

All bull****, my MTN phone shows 4 bars in the signal cage, on 8ta's website under coverage they advertise HSDPA and HSPA+. I think this needs a bit more attention, folks at 8ta. I live in Cape Town southern suburbs.

Messaging:
* USSD (per 20 sec) @ R0.20 anytime...

USSD Support Services:

* Dial *188*PIN# to Recharge
* Dial *180# to Purchase a Bundle or Transfer Airtime
* Dial *188# to Check your Airtime Balance
* Dial *140*cellphone number# to send a 8ta Call Me

so does this mean we have to pay to use each of those services??

Just need to educate call center staff on what Blackberry Internet Service is.

They call me and when I asked about it, she informed me they don't have BIS. I told her I needed BIS and thought the call would end - but she kept insisting I could use my BB on their network. I explained that I needed the service - but I get the feeling she had no idea :/
