Gooday:)

First I want to check out 8ta broadband. I want to do the 10Gig 8ta contract before i dive in.
Bought sim and got it RICA'ed.
Bougth air time and converted to data to test broadband.

Using Vodafone B970 data modem. Using external arial connection to obtain better reception.
When connected it switches over to cyan color. (3G or HSDPA)
I did a speed test and results are poor. (Midrand or Pta)
Upload sped 0.5Mbps and download approx same speed. Ping 55ms which is very good.
My question is looking at the modem and report i get is as follow:
1) Connected to Mtn (R).
2) Signal strength is -66db, this looks good. (Vodacom is -55db.)

How do I get over to the 8ta network and not the Mtn one.
I have used in the passed Mtn sim cards and data and results where better.

Any suggestion wil be welcom.

Regards

It explains all. Forgotten to make SIM non-roaming? Normal prepaid SIM doesn't allow connecto to 8ta network. Call Customer Centre to provision your SIM for 8ta, say you need use GoBig data special. Once you do it, you won't be able to access MTN network anymore.

@sajunky

Does Mtn always trottle the data network.
I have seen Mtn test results which were a lot better.
Last year when I spoke to 8ta their towers where +/- 6km away from me.
Looking at the coverage map it is all 3G network around me.
Have to wait and see. I have applied for a Mtn uncapped lite data package. I see from the forum the external arial connection does not work on the newer modem. So Im not that keen to take the package if my old modem still works.

- It you want roam to MTN, you can do it on standard SIM and standard data bundle (not attractive at all).
- AFAIK, external antenna connector is properly implemented on the latest modems E367, K4605.
- 8ta GoBig special can be loaded on the standard SIM, just make it non-roaming first. You don't have to buy a new modem. But if you want modem with external antenna connector, you can get from 8ta E367 @R699, which is a nice price.

@all

Now I have done and bought a Mtn simcard. According to Mtn network map I should be on 3.6Mbs.
Which does not relate to it, 0.5Mbs download and 0.67 Mbs upload does not relate to 3.6Mbs.
That is why 8ta figures relate to each other.

Did e-mail 8ta for non roaming sim. Even supplied address, no reply.
Last time i checked I was to far of any 8ta towers. So this will not work.
I'm usung a poynting arial with my b970 modem.
The other thing which i can say any one of the other networks cant even display any you-tube video witout any interruption.
This should be a benchmark. My 384 ADSL line also cant do.

Speak to customer centre from this SIM, free call. They check coverage while you speak. What is a problem?

@sajunky

I'm looking for reliable network.
Descent browser speed,downloads and watching once in a while fishing video's over the net.

I have applied @Telkom to see if I can up my speed (1024 is apparant the max speed in our area).

When you are roaming to MTN, you are not using 8ta network, but MTN. See my first post.

@sajunky

8ta network is on their own network. 8ta makes use of MTN because of the infrastructure.
8ta network towers are +/-6km away from me. This is why I roam on MTN backbone.
8ta makes use of MTN backbone. This was the problem from the begining when 8ta network was born.
Nothing has changed except 8ta using MTN backbone to give more access to remote areas.

Looking at MTN network area where I live I should have 3.6Mbs access which is also not the case. When I tested it was never constant at 1Mbs. So for me to go over to MTN is also a wast.

MTN is fine, then use it. Or use standard 8ta bundle which allows roaming to MTN.
But pleake keep in mind when you plan to use GoBig special that it only works on 8ta network. It works only on non-roaming SIM as per my initial response to your query.

Hi all

Was switched over to the 8ta network 65502.
It seem my lowest download is 1Mbs.
I think I can live with that.

Good start. Now think how to improve signal quality and speed. What is your signal strenght after converting to non-roaming?

Not to butt in but -52dBm is excellent, you won't see better. Speed should be top of the line, maybe 6/4mbps.

My B970 modem reports this.
Technically, by 3GPP specification no device should report 52dBm, so I don't know whether you don't say truth, or it is due to a firmware bug.

@sajunky

How can I upload a screen shot of the modem managment page.

Regards
