Claremont in Cape Town? That's where I am and my connection is decent. Although I am on the Claremont/Rondebosch boundary.

DL Speed under 0.5M

My signal strength on the 8ta coverage map is supposed to be "good", but it really is not. My DL speed is under 0.5Mbps and this is really not acceptable.

I am really considering going for less cap and higher speed somewhere else.

Can someone tell me where they logged their problem?

Thank you

This was random tests to 3 different servers all with that same limit... Which looks allot like the speed people get on 4mbps adsl which, makes me think this is running on some weak backbone...

I'm about to cancel my pathetic iburst speed of max 0.7Mbps.
You can't even watch decent streaming with that.
And from the pages upon pages of complaints here from others, i doubt it will get better soon.

So now I'm interested in the 8ta 10gb for R199 contract.
However, this thread has me a bit nervous...
So too this review...

First it was glowing report...,
http://graphicline.co.za/content/8ta-3g-review
Then it all went pear shaped
http://graphicline.co.za/articles/telkom-8ta-3g-test

This is a two year contract, and i certainly don't want to be locked into a contract that does not deliver.
I email the sales peoples, and one of them suggested i get the R149 prepaid bundle to test it...

however, as this review shows, speeds can drastically reduce over time, maybe it's because as more people signup, the infrastructure get overloaded? Does the consumer protection act allow me to get out of the contract if my speed drop significantly? To a point where i can no longer stream videos - this is the main reason I'm leaving iburst.

I believe if you cancel a contract, the supplier is entitled to a nominal fee? What would this nominal fee be for 8ta cancellation?

Why not go for the Telkom offer of R250 for 15GB. What makes it worthwhile is the fact that it's month to month, so you can cancel any time if you're not happy. I saw it in the paper the other day.

Hi, i must say after I started this thread, my 8ta has improved in leaps and bounds I currently have 2mbps uncapped adsl from mweb and still use my 8ta when i need things fast or if I am on the go with my laptop.

The other night I got a constant 700+ KBPS on a download on my 8ta.

Thing with all this, is it is very much region dependent, wireless lives on signal strength, but also on the amount of people connected to the tower. So best bet, would be check coverage map, even better if you know someone with 8ta let them come to your place and test.

Like I said the speed at my new place is awesome, no waiting on youtube!

Contracts are of concern and most mybb members will advise on not taking one where possible. I had no choice and it worked out ok for me. you could also try a pre-paid option and see if that works.

that and ADSL connection?
it's probably without line rental, which should push it closer to R500.

have to be a registered business to get this.. hence its telkom business and not 8ta

ja, just got a call from them.
wanted to know what my business name is...

so what the difference between my money and business' money :wtf:

so i went out and bought me the R149 2gig prepaid data promo.
just to test the waters.

on speedtest.net, i get an average of about 2.5Mbps. not really the full 7.2 Mbps that the modem is capable of but that is 5 times faster than the 0.5 Mbps I was getting with Iburst at 90% + signal strenght.

It's like I discovered a whole new world.
Streaming not 100% smooth but pretty close, at least I can now watch more than what it is buffering, which is very minimal. And that is really my benchmark for good connection.

I'm not a very big telkom fan, but they scored quite a bit of browny points with their latest value for money data packages.
Possible spurred on by Cell C's R0.15 per mb rate... they've gone one better to slash it to less than 2cents.
And this is what the people of this country has begging / crying for all these years. healthy competition. can only be good for this country.

I'm going to venture into the R199 / 10gig contract now. I pray the service remains as good as it is now.

Hi All, i bought 2 X go 3Gigs Big two weeks ago. and it is so so so slow. according to the 8ta coverage my house is covered with signal.

But i NEVER ever get more that one bar or 17% signal strength. i use Vodacom as well in the Same 3G dongle and i get full bars 98% all the time.....

Did you first bought a 8ta prepaid sim, loaded a few bucks on it and tested your signal strength?

No?

That still dont rectify the 1% connection speed i get. according to 8ta's map, my house is covered 100% maybe they should update the map then?

yes!

Must've changed since end of last year... My wife signed up for the 5GB roaming (R379 p/m including iPad) and I signed up for the 15GB non-roaming (R249 p/m SIM only)... Been using it now for 2 weeks.
