Absa unveils banking app

Don't bank with ABSA but went to see what the app looks like in the App Store.

No iPhone 5 support...

What is up with SA devs? Very few SA apps have iPhone 5 support.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this developed by the Barclays dev team in UK, since Absa don't have an IT/dev department no more?

Hard to believe they dont have an IT/Dev department. I know a lot of people were retrenched, but they will still have several dev teams.

And for a key initiative like this, they would have pulled in resources to make it happen

Seriously we waited 2 years for this - just downloaded it and can't even sign in, stays on "please wait" after I entered my account number and pin.

and now it has crashed...

Galaxy s3

It only asks for a PIN before allowing you in. No password challenge.

How secure is that?

FNB App is the same... the security is in the linking with your internet banking profile.......

Keep your pin to yourself and all will be well

Runs fine on the iPhone 5, just has the black borders above and below because it hasnt been adjusted for the bigger screen size
The iPhone 5 has been on the market for 7 months now and an app only recently released doesn't support the larger screen...

That is poor. Very poor.

Only thing I can think of is that they want to make it as far backwards compatible as possible which leads to this. The app is compatible with iOS 4.3. Who is still on 4.3?

Can anyone use this to buy prepaid electricity?

It may be worth using if it can do that. Their normal cellphone banking is useless in this regard. Always get: "An error occurred. Please try again later."

ABSA doesn't allow you to buy electricity on normal internet banking. Don't know why. It's the only thing that drives me crazy.

Disappointed. It's a textbook example of poor user interface.

I've only used it to buy prepaid airtime and the fun started right there on the landing page, trying to figure out "what next".

Seems like the developers have a spinning wheel widget fixation - news flash: widgets don't improve the user experience, but they can certainly spoil it. Instead of trying to to cram tiny text messages on the wheel detailing beneficiaries and last payments (seriously, they do that) rather create a drop-down list. It's so annoying that when you fix it you can call it version 2 (major upgrade).

I can't believe it took two years to create this. I think they didn't have the budget (cost cutting, remember?) and did this overnight when they finally got some money.

Grade: F (could do better if they listened in class)
