Absurd cPanel license price increase

I don’t have any skin in the game but I would comment that they should have phased in the new pricing over a longer period especially for existing customers.

Stupid question. How will this affect the users of a hosting company? So if I host a website on a server with xCompany, does this mean the hosting costs will increase or will the service provider absorb the increases?

The most likely scenario is that most hosting companies will either push up their pricing a bit or move their customers over to a competing panel. Some might choose to absorb the increase but since hosting is a high volume, low margin game I think this is unlikely, especially in the long run.

I might be showing my ignorance here, but is there not some kind of open-source thing that does what cpanel does?

If someone wants to write one I'd be happy to muck in and help.
Theres a thread thats circulating on WHT about security audits on free and paid for control panels in light of the announcement. Do a search for the thread and you'll get a decent list of open source panels.

If you have two years worth of time to develop such a system then go for it, baring in mind that in that time alot would have changed.

Or some might close, as many have indicated.

@RedViking -> @anthor is 100% correct. I've heard of some cases where the cost is just too expensive to absorb and people are already considering migrations to another control panel. As @Jade @ ZA Domains indicated, some are even closing cause it came out the blue.

Fair point.

I have a rough idea of what cPanel is, but could someone ELI5 why one would use it instead of just getting a VPS and doing Apache / Wordpress (for example) yourself? Is it just ease-of-use? I've done the latter enough times that I'm comfortable with it, never used cPanel though.

cpanel is used more extensively than simply deploying wordpress, but if thats all you're doing then there is no reason why you couldnt do what you have suggested.

automation and integration with billing systems is key for web hosting providers, and the market dictates that it wants cpanel. That is, cpanel is a household brand name of which end users have come to know very well and demand / ask for it by default.

Update has just been posted
pdate to Account-Based Pricing
Late last week, we announced a new licensing and pricing structure for cPanel. This change was the result of several months of conversations and modeling to ensure we understood as many use cases for cPanel & WHM hosting as possible. In the days following our announcement, we have heard from many of our Partners, both online and on the phone, and the feedback has been clear. Our analysis of use cases was incomplete, and we underestimated the amount of support that some of our Community require to implement these licensing model changes. This was a miss on our part, and we are sorry for any concern we have caused as a result.

Your feedback has been taken to heart, and we are making adjustments. Outlined below are changes that we feel are positives for our Partners and direct Customers.
For Partners:
Implementation Support for Partners
We understand that account based pricing requires additional effort from our Partners. We want to help ease this transition by providing implementation support to our Partners. We will apply a one-time credit to cover part or all of your September 15th invoice up to $10,000 USD. For complete detail on our implementation support program, including all eligibility requirements, please contact your Account Manager.
WHMCS Automates Billing for New Licensing Model
If you are an existing WHMCS customer, we will only make the new cPanel & WHM hosting pricing model effective once the new WHMCS functionality is available to support the new pricing model. You will continue to be charged at the current pricing rate until 30 days after the release of this new functionality.
If you are not yet a WHMCS customer, and the billing functionality would help your business implement the new cPanel & WHM hosting pricing model, we are providing up to 12 months of no cost WHMCS licensing to our Partners. Please contact your Account Manager for details.
Introducing cPanel Plus Cloud (50 Account Package)
We will add a new 50 account “Plus” package available at Partner pricing for $25/month USD to our Cloud offering for customers who aren’t quite ready for a 100 account+ Premier license.
Fixed Price Packages
We will provide fixed cPanel Premier Packages starting with 100 account licenses, and we are making additional packages available in 50 account increments (i.e., 150, 200, 250, etc.) for customers where auto-scaling is not a good fit. To avoid a disadvantage in comparison to auto-scale pricing, we are offering these fixed price packages at a discount. Please be aware that no further discounts apply to the fixed price packages.

* Each additional 50 accounts above 250 adds $5.00/month in licensing cost. Pricing in USD.
We Only Get Paid When You Get Paid
After implementing the new pricing structure, if your customer fails to pay for their cPanel license, Partners will be able to request a service credit for up to 1 month via Manage2 on a license by license basis. We only get paid if you get paid. Please contact your Account Manager for details.
Account Managers Are Here to Help
We understand that you may have additional questions regarding the new licensing model for cPanel & WHM hosting, including questions about implementing this new licensing model for your business. Our Account Managers are here to help. Please reach out to your Account Manager with any questions or concerns. We want to work with you to find a solution.
We are publishing our PartnerNOC Licensing Guide (which is the same for all of our Partners) directly on our website to review at https://go.cpanel.net/partner-license-guide-website. Our PartnerNOC Licensing Guide will also be updated to reflect these changes over the next week.
For Direct Customers
Reinstating cPanel Solo Licenses
By the end of this week, we will reinstate cPanel Solo licenses (Cloud) in the cPanel Store. They will be available at $15/month on Cloud only. Additionally, we will no longer convert existing cPanel Solo licenses to the Admin package.
Extending Yearly Licenses
We are automatically extending all yearly licenses to help with the transition to the new licensing model. For licenses expiring between June 27th and July 20th, 2019, we will give additional time to select a new option in the ‘Managed Licenses” area in the cPanel Store. Please complete your selection no later than July 21, 2019.
Simplified Partner Application Process
The cPanel Store is in the process of being remodeled. We want to simplify the process of becoming a Partner. The cPanel Store release scheduled for August 2019 will provide a dramatic improvement on the process to become a Partner. Keep an eye out for this important change. Customers with a large number of accounts that meet Partner requirements will see a significant discount on our new pricing with Bulk accounts starting a 0.10 USD per account.
Reduced Partner Requirements for Developing Economies
In addition to a simplified partner application process, as described above, we are also lowering the financial requirements to become a Partner for companies in developing economies. We are reducing the minimum monthly spend from $500 to $200 for qualified companies located in developing economies*.
Additionally, the cPanel Store Licensing Guide (https://go.cpanel.net/store-license-guide), will be updated to reflect these changes over the next week. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to our customer support team: [email protected]
Thank You
For all our Customers and Partners who reached out to us to let us know their concerns with changes; thank you for providing your direct and constructive feedback. If you have any other feedback you’d like to share, feel free to come visit at our conference later this year, reach out to your Account Manager, our Customer Service Team or the Community Team on Slack, Discord, Reddit.
Sincerely,
J. Nick Koston
CEO

* To qualify under the developing economies minimum, companies and their billing address must be registered in a country on the United Nations Developing Economy report as of July 3, 2019. A comprehensive list of current Developing Economies is available here: https://unctadstat.unctad.org/EN/Classifications/DimCountries_DevelopmentStatus_Hierarchy.pdf
The programs and processes above may require additional documentation, and individual participation may be terminated.

So nothing changes, what a waste of an announcement. They literally stopped us to tell us to carry one.

Yup - thats all folks, chat in the new week and have a lekker weekend.

DirectAdmin is the future ;)

So not addressing the actual real issue.

How does DirecrAdmin compare to past cPanel Pricing, Current cPanel, DirecrAdmin pricing?

@rpm you gonna run an updated article on this?

For those who say they gonna jump the ship immediately, how is it going to affect your Clients that are used to cPanel and would still want to continue with cPanel?

We've managed to secure a few DA lifetime licenses so will start testing in house and then offer beta's for our clients so cant comment as of yet. As previously mentioned, we purchased 3 year licenses for cpanel and these come to the end of their lifecycle next year so we still have time.

Got a DA license from BuyVM (free with the VPS) and its quite a good looking panel. Plan to move end of year from CP.

The new skin looks great and there is discussion about even more improvements - hopefully within a week or so.
Personally I think DA is going to excel within the near future and offer an extremely competitive product, not that it isnt already so

Installed DA on a test bed.

Am a bit confused. If one doesn't have resellers, am seeing it correctly that you create a main/root reseller and then use that to add users?
