accident with no insurance help

I hope those smart Alecs who often post here and say that Insurance isn't necessary, read this thread.

I am sorry for the OP, but really, two months "shopping around" for insurance is just bloody silly.

Hopefully there is a lesson to be learnt from this, and thank heavens the only thing hurt is the OP's bank account...

Wait wait wait... STOP THE PRESSES!!!

If I read correctly, the OP is still paying the car (R1500) which means it is financed. Wouldn't the finance house require him to have comprehensive insurance to cover THEIR loan for the period of the finance?

The OP better hope his finance house doesn't find out about him reneging on the contracts terms...

Good GRIEF!! Good point!!

If he's paying the car off it HAS to be insured!!

Lelik is niks!!

Dude...tip going forward, esp with cars like Golfs that dont have ABS. When stopping in an emergency...never hit anchors hard. The wheels lock...car slides, and takes longer to stop. Just do short burst of hitting the pedal ;)

Manual ABS :D

for my golf at my age they wanted 1200 ...thats what i pay monthly

I know its a Golf and all but that is really very high, I think you should phone around..

I bought a car for R200k last year when I was 23 and full comprehensive insurance at retail value is just under R1k per month and I thought that was high..

That's actually decent, about right, I assume you using a broker.

How does insurance work ?

Interesting thread. :D I don't fully understand how car insurance works and have some questions to those of you who does.

Similar scenario as OP.

GUILTY (non-insured) party causes damage to INSURED party.
INSURED party has contract with THIRD party ( insurance company) too fix damages regardless of who causes it.
INSURED party claims for damages from THIRD party and damages get fixed.
GUILTY party has NO contract or business with THIRD party.

Now...THIRD party claims from GUILTY party, but GUILTY party has not caused THIRD party any damage.
How can they claim anything ?

My logic says that INSURED party can claim that GUILTY party must fix the damages
but they never claim it, instead they claim from THIRD party who complies because there is a contract.

How does work in the real world ?
Does THIRD party actually claim for the damages from GUILTY party ?

If poster #11 in a thread insults poster #22 in a thread, can poster #33 demand an apology be made to poster #33 ??? This is how basic my question is.

Cheers

3rd party means that when you cause an accident and hit a Merc, your insurance pays for the merc's damage, but not yours.

3rd party isn't an actual 3rd person or bystander in the accident. 3rd Party refers to the person who is not you and who is not your insurer, but the only person who will get paid out in the event that you hit their car.

So if you have only 3rd party insurance and someone hits you (their fault), tough luck. No pay out to anyone.

If you hit someone (your fault) they get paid out, not you. (This helps when the car you hit is an Audi R8 and you have R100 left in your bank account)

What makes 3rd party so important is that if you hit me (your fault) and you have no money, I'm at least going to get my car fixed at your insurer's expense, seeing as it wasn't my fault. I then also won't have to arrive at your house with a baseball bat, 2 black bags and a bottle of lime.

I think Third party in this case refers to the insurance company rather than 3rd party insurance..

And in such a case, the "third party" can claims from the guilty party purely due to the 3rd party being out of pocket due to the actions of the guilty party, regardless of contract or not.

Oh and Voicy, its Lye, not Lime... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lye

....
Whatever happens, you should get on the phone and get yourself some insurance ASAP even if it's only 3rd party.

+1

In February my wife and I where not sure if her car was still insured by her brother (he claimed he never took it off his name but we transfered the car into her name in December). This was a Friday late afternoon (after 5pm) that we realised this. We decided sod this and phoned First 4 Women - 1 hour later the car was insured.

Only then did we decide to shop around. We signed a cheaper policey in April (kicked in 1st May) and was 45% cheaper with same cover.

4 days before the First 4 Women cover was going to cease, my wife cracked her windscreen. Our excess was R660 on a R4K windscreen. The temporary insurance was worth it!!!!

Just saying that insurance is there when you need it most but expect it least.

Then I'll shop around for cheaper or equal quotes. As I said, I will be inconvenienced for sure :D

Your post reminded me about the irony of our current insurer, Hollard. My wifes brother had her car (when it was in his name) also will Hollard and was paying more than what we are currently paying. The reason, we used a good broker ;) (Bit OT but we ended up getting insurance for the business, car, all risk for my mountain bike , and household insurance for 20% less than what we where paying for the business and car previously, and we got better cover)

I think you're a knob for not having insurance. If you'd bumped into me I'd claim from my insurance and have them come after you. Dont see why my car should be repaired shoddily because you dont have the foresight to get insurance.

All of this has been covered in this thread. That is why YOU have insurance, no matter if he does or doesn't :)
