Additional DStv competitor details emerge

Hey guys,

I understand the frustration regarding to long wait. What I can tell you so far is that it looks like ODM will let me know more details this week or the next regarding channel offerings and that the launch date is still set to be between April and May this year (as it has been for the past seven months). There's a lot happening within the Pay-TV space right now and I assure you that we'll be staying on top of it :)

Lack of sport channels will seriously limit their subscriber base and still give Multichoice the upperhand... I know not everyone watches sport, but I'm sure many DSTV subscribers' main reason for paying R500pm, is for SuperSport

competion is always good but multichoice has a strong subscriber base and it will be difficult for them to convince multichoice customers to move to their network as long as they are still offering the same price as multichoice. you pay R220 for 35 channels @ multichoicen and they want us to pay R299 for 30 channels!!!!! Food for thought

True that, however, with ODM, you should be able to choose and multichoice has like 2 million subscribers, we have close to 50 million people in SA, the market is wide open...

I don't think they are offering any HD channels from the outset but this will be added later IIRC

This is the receiver they're gonna use.

The card goes in the side and will be locked to your cellno. It needs to be activated by sms.

When they start offering pvr, they just upgrade the epg on the same box which will enable the usb port. You record to external hdd,but content will be encrypted and only playable through settopbox.

Do you know for sure that this is the set top box they'll be using?

That is so fugly!

One of the only things I miss from the UK is the 40 free Digital Channels.
Could be so, so easy here... with a little bit of deregulation.

Sci-Fi channel ftw. Don't give a toss about the rest, although F1 would be a double bonus.

In the meantime we've got Neotel, than Infraco, but Telkom is still in the Business, So will be MC.

Sci-Fi, HBO and perhaps The WB (or whutevr)?

Add a SuperSport channel or three to the mix. Hopefully they can score MNet and ETV too?

Please? :)

Actually my choice would be:

1. Sy-Fy
2. Comedy Central
3. HBO
4. The CW
5. The WB
6. Fox
7. Teletoon/Kidsco
8. Discovery
9. MGM
10. NatGeo

35 Crap channels yes. 20 of those channels is useless. At least ill be able to choose my 5-10 channels that i gonna watch with ODM and will prob be much cheaper. Theres prob thousands of people that ask MC for a custom channel bouquet and they just give us a lekka "up yours".

I think this company is more like Seacom: At first they may seem like the usual ill-behaved South African co, but a closer look reveals that they are serious. My gut feel is that they will change the tv landscape in SA, just as Seacom has changed the internet landscape.

Lets hope so!
