Additional DStv competitor details emerge

Lack of sport channels will seriously limit their subscriber base and still give Multichoice the upperhand... I know not everyone watches sport, but I'm sure many DSTV subscribers' main reason for paying R500pm, is for SuperSport

+1 . I'm guessing at least 50% of the DSTV subscriber base only has it for the sport.

That is the only reason why I keep DStv, for my sport, everything can easily be downloaded with newer seasons and episodes from the interweb

Precisely..

sport is the ONLY reason I still have DSTV.. and even that is slowly becoming less and less of a drawcard if you ask me... They're focusing on Soccer which is not a sport I give a toss about tbh...

True, but some people cant as they have a measly 3 gigs or similar!
I for 1 have my DSTV and will get ODM and super5media if they ever come out!

Subscription based television will be destroyed by the first company who introduces worthwhile, affordable Pay Per View and On Demand shows. But for those formats to succeed you will need a technologically advanced society who appreciate the concept of "freedom of choice" to make it sustainable.

My ideal TV situation would be something like this:

1. I pay a monthly access fee (which includes the goddam government theft levy). I'm happy to pay R99 per month.
2. I get a menu of TV shows, movies and sports events that I can chose to;
a) download to my PVR for a set fee (R20 for a new release seems fair)
b) watch on a once off, streaming (broadcast) basis for a cheaper fee (R10 for a rugby match seems reasonable)

This is how it works in the US. Why can't it work that way here?

which bird , which bird ???

Sirius 4, which is located at 4.8 degrees east, and Intelsat (dstv) is located at 68.5 degrees, so yes we can still use our current dishes, but it'll have to be repositioned to catch the Sirius 4 signal.

Yes but how far will R500 get you ?

-R100 pm access fee
-5 movies per month R100
-10 episodes of a series R 200
-5 sporting events R100

Then it makes DSTV look a lot better.....

Anyway, I want a mix of pay per view and normal scheduling, with the newer movies and series on demand.

Yeah, do wish they were here already. And do wish we had a better idea of their programming. I would be keen to find a bit more diversity. Multichoice has become a bit mono on their customer, I'm afraid.

Comedy Central, HBO, CW, SyFy... Get that and you've got a subscriber...
