Additional DStv competitor details emerge

Rumour is that dstv will still have the first run brand new stuff locked down. ODM will only be able to air stuff when it becomes avialable as a second run. Similar to the sabc vs mnet. DSTV had "the OC" first, and only when the second run rights became available did the SABC air it. Similar will happen with ODM. They will most likely air shows after dstv had it in combination with lesser known first run stuff dstv did not buy.

The only real advantage odm has is that they will not have the "all or nothing" approach dstv uses. This may however force dstv to adapt or die. If odm for example introduces a better PVR offering than DSTV (which at present is not very difficult to do) DSTV will have lot of egg on their face.

The SIRIUS 4 satellite, located at 5° East.

If you have an existing dstv dish, you will need to either install a new dish pointing to the ODM satellite, or you will need to reposition your exising dish, making dstv reception impossible.

Where will the Super 5 Media satellite be?

DSTV = CRAPPY CHANNELS AND NO NEW SERIES . Need more; new stuff a competitor will be nice.

This is the receiver they're gonna use.

The card goes in the side and will be locked to your cellno. It needs to be activated by sms.

When they start offering pvr, they just upgrade the epg on the same box which will enable the usb port. You record to external hdd,but content will be encrypted and only playable through settopbox.

It strikes me that another operator is just additional expense for the subscribers.

There's bugger all on DSTV most nights, so you'll need the new service, but you'll maybe not cancel because there's prolly something on DSTV that you want to watch, like, I dunno, Mythbusters or something. :(

And then there's sport; if DSTV gets the Australian Grand Prix and the new operator gets Singapore, you'll have to get both packages if you're a F1 fan, won't you?

If only... :( . IIRC Supersport has the exclusive broadcast rights for F1 in South Africa. I don't know how these 'exclusive' deals work, but it seems that DSTV would be the only place for us F1 fans :(

On Deukom RTL TV F 1 is exclusive in detail but it is in German. So I compare F 1 DSTV and must say the RTL show is much better

Ok fair enough. Thought they might launch with a more expensive unit with more functionality as well.

Then they can delay it like SABC used to do. I'm not to phased as long as i see it the same day.
I don't want to hear about it on the news or via friends on Monday.

R500 for, on average, 2 two hour races a month is a rip of note.
Rugby you get every weekend so that makes it slightly more worthwhile.
