Additional IP range for ADSL users

Telkom explains its IP address policies: “Telkom uses IP’s as any other network resource and they need to be increased from time to time to deal with extra demand/service roll out. Telkom buys IP’s in blocks to do long-term planning based on design rules.”

You can see that luu luu poo and the rest of her gang do not have the faintest idea wtf ip addresses are...

Can some rich bugger buy a whole lot of IP adresses and then squat on them so that hellskommels can't expand any more?

Except any non-telkom company... :D

Everytime Telkom makes an announcement of upgrades / expansions in areas they know and understand very little about (ie. broadband) I get very worried. I can almost see period of increased downtime and problems caused by Telkom's bungling incompetence :(

EDIT:
“Through this process, Telkom wants to better utilise the available addresses. Some of the IP addresses will be reserved for new routers which will be installed in the future. Importantly, more IP’s will enable Telkom to better structure the network and service deployment,” said Letlape.
This doesn't inspire any confidence either. Anyone care to take a wager that Telkom will use this to further entrench TelkomInternet's unfair advantages over other ISP's? Triple-Play anyone? Sorry you have to use the dedicated IP Ranges exclusive to Telkom for optimised performance. What's that? Your exchange / line doesn't support 4mbps? Guess you'll just have to wait another year or two for WiMax, in the meantime, sign-up with TelkomInternet and get superior performance on your existing linespeed thanks to the new, optimised IP Ranges!

The funny thing is, knowing Telkom they won't have to optimise anything, simply degrade performance on the existing IP Ranges and leave the new ones (under their control) standard.

An ISP simply buying enough IP addresses for their user base is news enough for the chief marketing executive to spin now as if it was some upgrade to the service?

Anyway, anyone happen to have an idea how much these IPs cost?

at current rates... R7.55/1$

R543600 a year, it costs $9000 per /16 block and Telkom uses 8 for ADSL right now.

Of course that not all telkom has

155.239/16
165.143/16 thur 165.149/16 which includes 143,144,145,146,147,148 and 149
196.15.128/17
196.25/16
196.43/18

plus the newbie ones and perhaps some more I didn't find... mean they got enough for at least 6 million users, can anyone mention enourmous waste?

It's a pity the Cybersmart admin don't read MyADSL - then they'd have known about the new IP ranges and configured their e-mail servers to allow connections from the new IP blocks.

Lots of people are going to be pissed off this morning cause the smtp server refuses their connections ... :D
