Adeqate PSU

No, your PSU will only draw as much as it needs, wont damage your components. However, some PSUs achieve their best efficiency at a certain amount of load, usually higher than 60% but lower than 90% if I remember correctly. Thus, your 1200W would be wasted.

lloydkayak - 550W for a gaming system is plenty. If I was you, I wouldnt question whether it was powerful enough (assuming thats the rated and not peak power), I'd read reviews to find out how good its quality is.

I mean, its perfectly possible that the GX 550W is a good quality PSU and good for your needs. Dont discount it until you've read reviews on it. Find out more information, if it looks dodgy, get something else.

I would choose a Corsair anyday over the Gigabyte PSU. With a decent rig like that, its well worth it to spend a few bob extra on PSU and get a decent warranty.

In all honesty I doubt you will need more than a cx400w but a 450-550w good quality will server you quite well with quite a bit of head room.

Corsair tends to underate their PSU for better efficieny ratings; the CX400 ~480W, VX450 ~570W(still over 80% efficient). The 480W rating for the CX400 is at 49ÂşC, most manufacturers give their peak rating at 25ÂşC.

With the price of electricity these days the more expensive, more efficient PSUs will make up the difference before too long. Corsair also has a five year warranty.

Lastly, that Odin 585W really is cr@p in comparison.

I am definately on board with the cheap PSU problem.

I had decided to take the CM 550W GX which is power certified to 80%

Not enough for this system>

The GX550watt will even give you room to spare.

It's a great PSU.

The ODIN is out... And conrad at digital addiction is putting the CM GX into my system for me... HIs prices and service have been awesome, free assembly, testing and delivery to the East Rand... very impressed indeed... Now come on FRIDAY!!!!!

The guys at digital addiction are legends>

The 550 CM PSU was sold out so they got me this instead for the same price:

Corsair VX550W , Eps12V , ATX 12V V2.2 - 550w ( 12v : 492w ) , 80PLUS certified for energy saving , 24pin ( 4pin detachable ) , with active-PFC , 6pin PCI-E + 1x8pin (6+2) PCI-E power connectors , 1x 120mm thermal controled fan ; 6x SATA ; with OCP, OVP, OPP, SCP, UVP - 5 years warranty -

Awesome awesome stuff

around R800 for the cm and closer to R900 for the corsair. Have read they are both rock solid

That's excellent service right there. The Corsairs have a 5-yr warranty, whilst I believe CM's range (like most brands) have a 3-yr warranty. As long as it's not a refurbished or 2nd-hand unit, the VX550 will keep you very happy.

The Corsair is in :) and I expect at least 5 happy years from the powerful PSU. Efficiency is great and I think it performs closer to a 600W even.... Awesome stuff
