So I've got 2 accounts, mweb uncapped, and a small WA capped account as backup.

I play a lot of online games and these two ISP's are usually really good for delivering great pings, MWEB for local gaming, WA for international gaming. However, recently i've been having severe lag issues and erratic pings. Both WA and MWEB have been giving me local pings up to 230ms, and international can be anything up to 400ms even. Actually unbearable.

Does anyone know if there's a connection between WA and MWEB? Are they using the same backbone or something?

I then got myself a small 1gig Afrihost account just to see, and that thing is pumping! 32ms local pings, full line speed, and pretty darn decent international pings at around 240ms (not as good as WA on a normal good day which is at 200ms). If its stays like this I'll be super happy.

Can anyone help me understand this please?

Sounds like your problem is at your exchange and not with any ISP. No, MWEB and Web Africa do NOT use the same backbone at all. MWEB is on Seacom while WA uses SAIX and both have their own IPC and shaping methods.

Just FYI, I've actually compared WA Capped with MWEB Uncapped when it comes to gaming locally and internationally and MWEB gave me the best pings and throughput on both accounts.

Hi markface

Please provide me with the compared results and I'll have a look into it. Not all ISP's have the same protocols and things might run smooth 1 minute the next you being throttled.

Not news I wanted to hear, but actually what I expected. Historically when mweb has been bad I can switch to WA and its free sailing, as well as vice versa. So when this didn't happen I got pretty concerned.

Anything I can do to rectify this then?

Ok, I did this right now:

MWEB = http://www.speedtest.net/result/2306569886.png

WA = http://www.speedtest.net/result/2306572292.png

Afrihost = http://www.speedtest.net/result/2306574248.png

Pings are decent in all of them I guess....but it really does show they are still dodgy on WA and MWEB.

BTW: 2mb line :)
