I know this type of thread is all over MyBroadband, but putting it all together is kinda hit-and-miss. Some posts are old, some posts are based on rage, and some are from fan-boys.

I am about to switch from iBurst 2mb 80GB data, to ADSL. My exchange supports 10mb and i would typically like to get it.

My Questions:

  1. It would be cool to hear from people that actually experienced the services from more than one provider
  2. 10mb or 4mb? is there really a great difference in speed? - Decided on 10mb
  3. Youtube, my wife and son lives on it. Is 4mb great, or should i rather go 10mb - Decided on 10mb
  4. Package size: i currently do not use the full 80gb, but that is due to connection speeds. Obviously i will be using more data on a faster line. Should i Go uncapped, or is it better to rather go capped, with a nice big package?
  5. ISP, any recommendations? i was on MWEB uncapped before, and had no problems, but i see they are now a lot more expensive. I't would be nice to have a balance between ACTUAL Throughput, cost and service.
  6. Does anyone know of an iBurst rep that would be willing to take the old iBurst equipment up the wrong end? I am willing to send a flow diagram of the procedure before-hand.
  7. **** Please note the procedure will be as painless as their service.

UPDATE
Decided on 10mb line
Seems like it will probably be WA, cause i see no-one is suggesting any other ISP
trying to decide between WA 10mb Capped 600GB, or WA 10mb uncapped.

My scenario: i work from home, thus traffic like HTTP, VPN and FTP is extremely important during the day. i also make use of skype quite a bit. I could not care less about the other protocols during the day, my wife and son will probably hog it at night.

Will it be viable to go for uncapped with them? or will these preferred protocols on uncapped be worse than capped during the day.

UPDATE
Decided on Web Africa 10mb Home Uncapped, and i will trial their 1GB capped account to compare the two. I will also compare that to Afrihost 1GB capped account (i still have a free one:))

This unfortunately will only happen in the next 2 weeks as i must first pay my penalties for iBurst before i activate DSL. I'll make sure to give some feedback on this thread, thanks for all the help peeps...MUCH appreciated

Nice link explaining WA bandwidth priorities: http://support.webafrica.co.za/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/669/0/bandwidth-priority-profiles

You definitely want 10Meg.
I've tried 6 different providers over the last year.

Mweb standard uncapped should work for you. You can use up 150GBs, before being throttled.

Web Africa capped is also awesome. Probably the best solution for you. For R100 less than the above you can get the 120+240 package. that means you can download 120GB before midnight, and tell your son he can download his steam games from Midnight which uses up the 240GB allocation. :)

600 GB
200GB anytime + 400GB from midnight – 6am
for 999

or u can get

home uncap for - 899
b uncap 4mbps 949 pm

but the cap one will be the fastet and best
home is also good if u work mostly after hours and keep downloading for after 12

that is theoretical, does one actually get the full 10mb (realistically)

That depends on many factors - much the same as it would 4MB...

I get get a consistent 900KB/s - 1000KB/s when the ISP is reliable. (I don't think I could do 4MB again)

I am leaning a bit towards WA as i already have my VPS with them.

The package above however works out more than their 10mb uncapped.

That R999 he listed though is including the adsl line rental.

WA 10mb uncapped = R899 including line rental

You can try it, but may be unhappy with with day time performance. the account is designed for people that work away from home during the day and get home at 5-6pm.

But you can try it and if you are unhappy it takes just a few seconds to upgrade via the control panel.

Yeah, the problem is that it would be easy for me to be impressed with it, seeing though i am moving from iburst and i do not get more than 40KB/s at the best of times.

Being impressed easily is the last mistake i want to make here. Can anyone compare these two packages's actual performances?

The capped packages perform the same the business uncapped.

But if iburst is what you're used to then the home uncapped will be amazing :D

as mentioned in my updated initial post...

no-one is mentioning any other Service Provider, everyone seems to be talking about WA... is it really that a clear decision?
