Good day guys,

I have a telkom faster (1024kbps) adsl line,
I have an MWEB uncapped 1mb/s package.

I used to have a 384 line at my house and decided to go to the 512 line about 2 months ago.

Lately the dsl light keeps flashing and my connection drops for a while and comes back on ,

this happens all day.

the telkom technician, said that after changing my jack plug all would be fine, hasnt helped.
then he said that i am to far from the exchange and i cant handle the 1024 dsl line and i would need to downgrade again.

but i had it for about 5 weeks at full speed and not one second trouble, then after a few days of rain this all started, thought it would go away but hasnt.

i have tried 3 different routers as well, brand new ones.

Any advice?

Report fault with Telkom.

1. Ask them to reset your port.

2. If that does not work, then it is a Telkom line fault and they MUST resolve it. It could be a dry joint or faulty jumper or even a faulty piece of cable somewhere on THEIR network. Do not allow them to shrug you off with stupid answers like the one the previous techie gave you. Do not allow them to close the fault ref until your line is working properly. Make a specific request about not closing the ref.... be VERY insistent.

Post your ADSL line stats (attenuation, noise margin, SNR, sync rate). You can get this info by logging into your router and going to the status page, depending on what router you have.

Hi Stallon,

I would like to look into this from our side, please can you PM me the MWEB account details. If possible, can you test with another ISP account to see if the same thing happens.

Kind regards,
MWEB Guy

Same story here, have had ADSL for 3 years now, no errors or any dropping or syncing issues. Got bumped up to 10meg when they roled in out and been good till Mid October when my line just dropped.

Reported fault that evening, techie was there that weekend, sorted the issue out, 24hours later intermittent again. Phoned telkom up told the story ok new fault to be opened, 9 fault reports later 10 techies to my place and a new router and still nothing.

They dont know what they doing either, one technician called me to explain to him where is the problem...

My stats are horrific and there is lots of crackling on the line SNR drops sub 5db on occasions, line att is 36-42 at times

I have had exactly the same problem for the past 7 -10 days. The link to the DSLAM drops all the time - sometimes after just a few seconds of making a connection on the LAN, other times it will hold the link for an hour! - I have a 1024 line and use Axxess as my ISP, who have always been good.

I am running the same machine and modem etc for the past 8 years - usually working fine until recently.

Put in a complaint to Telkom and a guy phoned me. I explained the problem and told him it was 99% certain to be a line fault of some sort, since I had this problem, although not as bad, about 8 months ago. That time they found a faulty network card at the exchange. The 'exchange' is a roadside box about 1 km from my house it seems! Heard nothing since, that was Sunday morning when he called.

Ocassionally my modem flashes up errors on the screen, just for an instant, saying 'Port not opened" or some such, so I am sure it is a Telkom issue.

I must have had this link disconnection 100 times today and it is driving me nuts!

Additionally the speed is pathetic - a tiny text-only email takes a minute to download, web pages sometimes will not load completely etc etc - what a gemors!

On top of all this I pay several hundred bucks a month for this garbage service.

I don't know how else to explain my problem to them, they say they understand yet the problem persists, they come to my place check the line, check filters and say i must change filters, so i go get brand new filter from the other room(unopened), replace it infront of him and it happens again. Next he says my router is the problem, he brings his router and it drops within 2minutes of connecting.. He says monitor it for a day he will be back to collect it tomorrow.. the line dropped 18 times in 30minutes of his departure.

I doubt they even know what intermittent internet is, they called my sister one day while i was at work and asked if the internet was working and at that time it was syncing and my sister who knows next to nothing about DSL sees the online light on so she says yes to the techie and he closes the fault..

Same Issue

I'm having exactly the same issue.

DSLAM connection drops at random intervals, sometimes once every 2-3 minutes for hours on end, sometimes it can stay synced for 12 hours.

Checked modem, filters etc. Reported fault to Telkom - they re-created the DSLAM connection (at least that's what the techie told me), put me on a new port - no change. In fact, I'm sure it's getting worse.

I live less than 1KM from the exchange, 10mbs line. I'll be impressed if this post get's submitted first time :P

So I did a little reading up and after checking my SNR Margin and Attenuation numbers tried syncing at 8mbs instead of 10mbs and *what* an improvement - no line drop for more than 12 hours.

I'll have to get hold of Telkom and see what they can do (if anything) so that I can get the full 10mbs, but at this stage, I'll be happy with 8mbs as long as it's stable.

CalizA:
Are you sure you live less than 1km away from the Exchange/DSLAM?
Also take note that the cables aren't always routed the shortest path from your home to the DSLAM either. Telkom should be able to give you the distance to the DSLAM, which isn't the shortest distance on the road. You can use that distance and compare it with your downstream line attenuation, which should be roughly 14.5dB/km.

By setting your modem to G.DMT modulation, it would synchronize at 8Mbps and nothing higher. ADSL2+ modulation would give you 10Mbps if your line attenuation is low enough.

Lastly, could you please post your line speeds, line attenuations, SNR margins & router brand + model here?

Hey guys

I have had this problem with Telkom for 3 months ....
Does anyone have any idea how I can get this problem fixed ?
I really hate having to reconnect every 2 minutes :(

Welcome to the myBB forums.

Could you perhaps state the following things for us:
1) brand & model ADSL modem that you've got
2) what city/suburb you're in?
3) your ADSL stats (ADSL mode [G.DMT/ADSL2+], line speeds (not attainable rates), line attenuations, SNR/noise margins)
4) do you hear any static noise on your telephone when you pick it up?
5) how do you have your ADSL/POTS filters installed? eg. ADSL modem is connected directly (without a filter), but my telephones are all going through POTS filters.

I know this problem, if you take the phone off the hook you should be able to use your dsl, sorry but that's all I can give you. It's called a high open connection google it.

What helped with me is changing my modem.

I am on 10mb line. My modem kept cutting out every few minutes, so I replaced it with a Broadcom based modem. Broadcom chips are known to be stable even when paired with more "fussy" line types.

Check hat all analogue phones have an adsl filter if no analogue phones no filter needed

DuoPlus 300WR
Richards bay, KZN
Line speed 4Mbps(Not to sure how to gain the other details)
No
Split Filter for ADSL cable and Phone Cable.

i have never had this problem before so i assume that it has to do with Telkom.
I have spoken to Mweb and they say that they have no problem on their side with my internet.
Telkom have even lowered my line speed and that still doenst work either. I wish they would just send someone to fix my line.
