So I live in Stellenbosch and recently (after more of a struggle than any human should ever have to go through with terrible Telkom service), I have gotten my line. Now, I was happy once everything was working, but this happiness was very short lived when I realised that my line is sycing at G.Dmt and not ADSL2+...

Am I the only poor soul suffering with Telkom (rhetorical question) - but seriously, I'd like some kind of information as to why there isn't better training for those who need to assist the population?

What speed line do you want? If you don't need more than 4Mbps it makes no difference whether you are on G.DMT or ADSL2+. I had an extremely stable 4Mbps connection for a long time on G.DMT - never had a days issues.

Thing is, its not so much speed as it is stability and actual connection performance. I have a 1mb line but only maxes at 0.86mb, with my router reporting crc errors. Also my ping is fluctuating which is bothering me... Id like a little more consistency..

I was in a telkom server room the other day and I was told that it does make a difference. G.DMT is also more susceptible to load interference from the exchange - so it is only really at night when my line is performing more like it should. I had a mate of mines line changed from G.DMT to ANL the other day, and it made a difference on his 2mb line- speed test reading from 1.26 to 1.88mb, with a decrease in ping of 20+

Sounds then like it's more of an exchange issue. Telkom are eventually going to roll out MSANs to replace their old hardware, there is not much you can do if the line is not faulty but wait for the upgrade.

Quite keen on all the new virtual tech that's going to be implemented in the future, was given a breakdown of whats to change and its quite impressive. I'd still like to have my line upgraded to ADSL2+ though, just to provide myself with some kind of surety that its not an issue that I could have solved - with out actually trying

I don't know much about all this, but hopefully can help a bit.
A speedtest I did in last few minutes : http://www.speedtest.net/result/2784356386.png

Also on 1 Meg line, and it's only when I download a podcast of around 20Mb or more that Free Download Manager shows the download speed of about 106KB/s. Try a podcast download & see if that reports more than Speedtest does for you ?

If on Uncapped, you can try from one of these :
About 28MB per show : http://www.frequencycast.co.uk/index.html
http://geekspeak.org/

Thanks for that. Okay so I gave the downloads a try and I achieve a maximum of 95kb/s.. thought it might be my download manager being funny with me so I ran a traffic monitor and it registers a max of 98kb/s but keeps dipping down hard.

I tried to download from news servers aswel, but that didn't end very well as I actually have worse speeds - quite bleak :(

It might just be your ISP, then.
Could be Telkom, if you're with them, and not your ADSL line per se.

I'm currently logged on through @lantic using their Bolt-on. If you can sign-up for a free 1GB (capped) Afrihost account still, try a download while logged on through them to make a comparison.

Other than that, could just be the fact it's in Cape Town area - seem to be many congestion complaints there.

I get the same speeds with the Afrihost account, but like you say, there is generally some issues here in Cape Town with the net.
I'm gonna have telkom change my modulation and from there see if anything changes. If not, well, I tried...

I doubt that :D

Some people definition of a server room or exchange is way off.

You would be surprised :P We drove past the other day and there was a number spray painted onto one of the walls, we called it and were let into the building. After much of an ado and a lot of trouble for not actually being allowed in, and the guy who let us in getting a bit of an uitkakking, the oak who was there showed us around a bit...

Its pretty much a one man station, poor oak just has to get up and connect orders all day - what a job
