I was struck with this DSMS thing about a month ago. 10Mbit line which has had a never-ever-drop sync of 10210kbps @ 6.5dB SNR for the best part of 2 years now. Suddenly, it got weird, down to 7Mbit at 11dB and now has me at 6Mbit @ 16dB SNR. Just about every night sees me remote into the office to do work and it's now a laggy experience not being able to have my 10Mbit.
16dB SNR and 20dB attenuation leaves so much room to get back the good 10Mbit sync speed. This DSMS thing has to go. I don't care what sales pitch Telkom fell for when they went for this, but it is crap. The experience is completely opposite to what the thing was "designed" for.
What's more annoying is how many technicians don't even know it exists.
It should be left to the dsl modem and the dslam to battle out what would be the best sync speed, but here the dslam dsms crap is lowering the negotiation ceiling unfairly. If the modem and dslam negotiate a bad sync (or one tweaked out by a user messing with the modem) then so be it, let them live with it or call in for a sync speed drop, but imposing an unfair and uncommunicated limit is ridiculous.
Anyone think it is petition and formal complaint time? Probably won't amount to much, though.
