Hi all,

I've been phoning Telkom 10219 for 4 days, just try to oder ADSL. But they were telling me different stories.

They told me my line was fibre %^%$&$$, which cannot be self installed. They must send tech. to change. Is this true?

I had the same problem in 2007. One would have thought they would have solved this one. I got around it by doing the full install on my side. The techie came in and did nothing ... they ending up not charging me. If they did, I would have asked what for?

They said the line had to be changed to copper, that's why they have to send techie.
Is the existing line material not good enough for ADSL?

How can I get over it?
Can I tell Telkom I don't want copper line, just give the ADSL for the existing line?
Sick tired of their BS!!

The actual story goes like this. The box on the road has fibre to the exchange. This is excellent for an ADSL connection. From the box on the road to your house there is copper. There is a device which converts the fibre optic signal to an electrical signal in the box on the road. Now the converter units are not meant for ADSL ... and if you want ADSL they will come in and change this unit to allow for ADSL. That apparently is what the techie has to do ... change the box on the road. It has nothing to do with you or your inside connection.

Thanks JayN!
But 1 year back at my friend's place, there was not such story. Why Telkom come up this now? Are they trying to cancel self install option by doing this?

What you could do is take a Do package, which will waive the installation charge (so you pay nothing). Then you just cancel the Do package. Make sure you don't sign a 12/24 month contract and make sure (via phone, get the agent name/reference number) that you can cancel the Do package at anytime.

They then come to do the install for you. However, I haven't seen a physical techie onsite installing anything for at least 4 years now and I've had 3-4 ADSL lines installed previously.

Hahhaha...that's what you think. I got knocked with a R1600 bill...for line and ADSL installation + rental even though I chose the self-install option. All I got from telkom upon querying this was "Yes, but this" and "Yes, but that". To put it in perspective... my 1st bill I received was for R258, my 2nd bill was R1614.47...I'm not liking this at all.

Well what was there reason. They can't just bill you for stuff that was supposedly 'free'. And if they say its because there wasn't something so they had to add some hardware to the exchange then say if you knew that it was gonna cost you R1400 more then you wouldn't get it.

Should be easy to get it reversed. And if they say no. then just cancel with them and sign up the next month. they not gonna charge you for something again if they installed it the last time.

hope what i typed makes sense...
