Hi All,

I currently have a 384 line with Telkom and I would like to upgrade to 1mbit or higher, but I am not sure if my line stats will be able to accommodate a higher speed. Currently my line attenuation is pretty good at 12db on the down stream but my SNR is currently 3db, which sucks, however I understand that if you can increase the SNR by increasing the power output which is currently below 1dbm. I understand that I cannot physically increase the power and that it is a Telkom exchange setting or that it is negotiated when the router connects to the exchange.

Now if i were to get a higher line speed would the system try to increase power to compensate for the low SNR or am I out of luck?

Finally the only real way I can think of to test this is to get Telkom to up my speed and see what happens. However I don't want to go for a higher speed and it doesn't work ie i have to have a 2mbit line or somthing instead of 4mbits. This would mean I would have to get them to downgrade me which would mean cash money.

So in summary what are my chances that I can get a higher line speed with a low SNR and low power output?

Hey guys here is my adsl stats, let me know what you think.

--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version: E.25.41.39
DSL VPI/VCI: 8/35
DSL Status: Showtime
DSL Mode: G.Dmt
DSL Channel: 64
DSL Upstream Rate: 128000
DSL Downstream Rate: 384000

Down up
DSL Noise Margin: 3.5 dB 10.5 dB
DSL Attenuation: 12 dB 36.0 dB
DSL Transmit Power: 0.9 dBm 10.6 dBm

Just to give some closure, gave the upgrade a try and the router compensated by increasing power. Synced at 1mbit with:

Down up
DSL Noise Margin: 3 dB 10.5 dB
DSL Attenuation: 6 dB 36.0 dB
DSL Transmit Power: 4.3 dBm 10.6 dBm

And? Are you satisfied with the upgrade? TBH I was happy moving from 384 to 1024.

Did you try to connect at 4Mbps? Your noise readings are very low but you seem to be able to connect at 1Mbps so you might be able to still do better.

Don't want to spend extra cash on the 10meg connection, but yes i have tried, managed to get telkom techie to up me to 10 just to see what will happen, synced fine, almost the same stats just the power output increased.

Uncapped works so much better than capped. Only issue I've had during the last week or so is that my downloads are getting throtteled during the day. At night it goes back up to max speed. Overall, I will never be able to use a capped product again.

Your router does not appear to be reporting the line statistics correctly then.
