ADSL speed upgrades and uncapped prices

Was this a serious question? If so, charging for speed is the only way to charge for uncapped since you'll obviously be using more data and/or bandwidth which the ISP has to recover some how. Why the difference between capped and uncapped - erm, one is uncapped and one is capped.
 
These speed increases are theoretical, I suggest each user check his practical fasted download speed and then select the account accordingly. All kinds of factors influence the max throughput of an ADSL conn, like distance from the exchange, line quality, network congestion, contention ratio's, network backhaul speed, time-of-day, etc. For example we have a 10mbps line, but the best sync speed is 6mbps, and average max burst is around 400-450kbps. Therefore it would be cheaper and more efficient to pay for a 4mbps ADSL conn! What's the use of pay for a 10mbps line and only getting 4mbps speeds!

Don't let all the marketing mumbo jumbo fool you... get the right speed for your circumstances! This issue will only be resolved when Telkom roll-out their new MSAN's, bring the distance from the premises to the "exchange" down significantly!
 
I want 2mb Uncapped for the SAME price as 1mb Uncapped.

Do this now ISP's.
 
Well for me personally it wouldn't be more data, I all ready get all I need on my 1mb, its just that I'd like to get it a little quicker. :D
 
Minor correction:

As I understand this, Openweb had a special on the 1mbps at R149 and it was a better quality product than vanilla.

Therefore by moving to 2mbps one is not only palying R130 extra (not R100) but is downgrading one's product.
 
Anyone know when the new Telkom prices officially kick in? Contrary to most of you I'm planning to downgrade my 4mbps to 2mbps as that's all I'm getting the last 8 months after a cable break in Jan. The sooner I start paying Telkom less for their k@k service the better I'll sleep.
 
Can't I just upgrade my 384 to 1Mbps line now via Afrihost (R279pm billed pro rata)
then when I am upgraded to 2Mbps line , 24th of August -
downgrade to 1Mbps the next month?

That way I avoid that long delay of 384 -> 1Mbps upgrade from telkom.

Opinions?
 
I would love an ISP to think outside the box and offer this type of service:

1) Option 1 is the current new 2mb data charge.
2) Option 2 is for those customers who have been customers with the same ISP for over a year - Keep the charge( at 1mb rates ) consistent for a 3 or 6 month period but throttle you down to 1mb once you exceed you monthly average data consumption for the past year.

This should split the market into those who want more speed but will still download the same volumes and those that wish to use the faster speed to increase the data consumption. This should also offer a protection mechanism in that the ISp will be protected from any further operating losses incurred due to faster sync speeds.

These are just my views and generally there is method in the ISP charge method so please dont rip this post apart based on IT specs. This just seems a simple solution to the very interesting question of does higher speed mean increased data usuage? Technically yes but practically hmmm?

Just had a look at Openweb's site and the prices on promo are ridiculously cheap...Well done to all at Openweb! :D

I agree with HosstheBoss, I am waiting for Telkom to upgrade 384 to 1mb than I can downgrade to 1MB. Doesn't make sense to pay so much for a 2MB line.

Telkom is doing it. the other ISPs already dropped pricing with the IPC price drop so doubt you'll get that.
 
It is sad that our original savior, MWEB with their "free the web" campaign, is now the most expensive option.
Is there anyone that moved from MWEB to Afrihost recently who can give feedback on their experience?

I live/work in Gordons Bay and our maximum ADSL speed from Telkom is 4Mbps. We pay the same as other users getting 10Mbps all around the country and am getting gatvol at the pathetic download speeds! This is discrimination of the worst kind. We also can't use 8ta here as no coverage. I wish the people at Telkom would get off their fat asses and get their infrastructure in this part of the 'civilised' world operating properly so that we don't get ripped off like this.
