ADSL Stellenbosch issues!

I'm getting 120KB/s with my NNTP downloads, but my latency is then 2000ms+, where it used to be sub 20ms when I download at that speed.

At least the Internet is online again!

Which ISP? I am using Afrihost 4Mbps (non-business) and it has been poor for the last 2-3 weeks. Mostly below 50kB/s well after 17h.

Same here, 887 exchange. Was down from around 9 this morning. No ISP could authenticate.
According my router, I've been back up since about 7 pm.

Luckily I had Afrihost 3G as backup.

I'm currently using OpenWeb, but I'll be moving to Afrihost capped from May onwards.

My speeds are pretty much independant of my ISP due to the heavy congestion on Telkom's infrastructure, however, during office hours, I rarely get above 1Mbps due to shaping on my OpenWeb uncapped account.

Hi everyone. Also been having heavy congestion problems (especially on the weekends) and my line is still down from this morning. How can I check with which exchange I am linked?

EDIT: Since it came back on, it's been running really smoothly! Stellenbosch Central.

I'm still having packet loss and very slow download speeds.

As soon as I'm doing 600kbps on my line, my ping also increases to like 2s+ :(

Lynedoch Area.

Well, we've been online since we cam back on on Friday night - even though a portion of the telephone line was stolen early Saturday morning along the Annandale road (as well as two portions along the Vlaeberg road!!). Fortunately there are 4 cables running along Annandale, and only two were cut - we must obviously be serviced on one of the other two :)
However, this morning we were dropped out again for a while.

Then I discovered now that the disruption was not only in/around the Stellenbosch area, but as wide as Franschhoek. One of my clients in Franschhoek called me this morning to inform me that they were without internet for quite a while (not sure how long).

This seems to indicate that the Telkom infrastructure (?) collapsed quite far and wide. How they will ever be able to fix it, nobody knows.

The attached pic is the sad face one sees when the cable collectors were busy in the area. It is still laying like that - who knows when it will be picked up and the pole replaced. The irony is that they took only abut 30m (x2) of the thick cable.

Here's how my ADSL download speeds has declined from last week till now...

Last week, I reached 4Mbps from 03:00 - 05:30:

Now, I reached 2Mbps at around 02:00 - 07:00, with it only peaking at 3Mbps around 05:30:

Sigh. Will we ever actually get what we pay for in Stellenbosch again?
My brother logged a complaint at ICASA, because Telkom didn't respond on his line installation request in Secunda, and then ICASA took like a month to process his complaint, where they sent the complaint to Telkom, who only had to respond within 14 work days.

So by going that route, it may take 2 months to just get something basic done...

I wonder if it would be possible to raise our concerns in terms of the CPA (Consumer Protection Act)?

I wonder if we could all collect data and then submit it to ICASA?

We would have to collect trace routes, packet loss statistics and speed tests at the same time for a couple of days.

I have received another e-mail from Telkom's "Social Networks" staff stating "...I’ve been advised that congestion relief is estimated for 4 April...."
I do notice that they only stated the month, but not the year. ;)

As bad as it is having to wait for 4th April, we're actually lucky that a) they actually gave us an estimation and b) that's a shorter relief time than the usual. So, while it sucks, there are some positives. Really hoping this fix will be longer term...

The Telkom Social Media team is usually very prompt and very resourceful, so I won't be surprised if they can actually pull it off to fix it for everyone in Stellenbosch by 4th of April.
Like last year (at a different location in Stellenbosch) I've had issues that looked like congestion for like 8 months or so, and none of the techies were able to solve it, and then within 2 work days the Telkom Social Media team fixed the problem!

Seems like Telkom Social Media had their hands full last week, because I got no response last week and suddenly I got some feedback on Facebook yesterday and different feedback on HelloPeter today.

On Facebook they said they worked on my fault on Saturday (of which I can see no result) and on HelloPeter they said that they're referring the case to the relevant department and actually provided me with an escalation number.

I'll definitely be satisfied if they can fix it by 4th of April - and I won't mind if they get it fixed earlier :D

Just to check that I'm not going mad here, but Stellenbosch's ADSL is still in the toilet at the moment, yeah?

We finally got our line installed today and I was horrified that at peak speed I only got 50kb/s on a 2mb/s line.

Eugh. April 4th, they said?

I've lived with no internet for this long, a little longer won't kill me...
