Greetings.

I have been experiencing massive issues with losing SYNC in the Ruimsig area lately.

This evening was losing sync every 10 minutes until I asked telkom to turn my line down and they put it on 1024mbps and now it appears to be fine.

I was given a reference previous which blamed "a cable faulty to be repaired on the 23rd of February", yet somehow I have not been able to get any status on this cable fault repair since.

I am also complaining about the 480kbps up...

Here are my niose etc...:

DMT Status Up
Operational Mode ADSL G.DMT
Upstream 480 kbps
Downstream 1024 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream) 6.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream) 30.0 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream) 31.5 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream) 58.0 db

Any ideas?

Strangely enough, my SNR margin downstream has gone up from 7.5 db to 30.0 db since the change down to 1025mbps

Changed it back to 3mbps:

ADSL G.DMT
Upstream 480 kbps
Downstream 3072 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream) 6.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream) 12.0 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream) 31.5 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream) 58.0 db

And she is stable...

According to my router supplier, Billion:

"Attenuation refers to resistance. If this value is high, then signal quality is low and vice versa." "A value above 55db is of concern (bad) and would require a technician to be sent out to try and rectifiy this"

SNR:

"A value above 7dB indicated sufficient signal strenth. The higher the signal value is the better"

Well that is not exactly strange, that's how it works. You will lose SNR [something like 1dB for every 450kbps gained] the faster your line syncs.

My line have similar issues, if i sync anything above 2.5 Mbit/s my line becomes unstable and it disconnects constantly.

Here's an awesome article on all these things http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm

So i also sit with a dilemma, 2.5 Mbit/s is stable, but how do you tell Telkom/router to sync at that speed? It seems because i'm on 4 Mbit/s it will autosync say at max speed ie. (3.5+ Mbit/s) and then keeps disconnecting/resyncing until "fate" decide to sync at 2.5....and then i'm fine for the night.....now only to figure out how to force it to the lower sync?

EDIT: Found my own answer , if you got a netgear

This project was born with the purpose of making experiments on Netgear DG834XX Adsl Router Series, first of all fixing many little issues we found out on official releases and after this, trying to improve its performances adding new features.

Advanced ADSL settings with smart adsl multimode, SNR regulation, bitswap, trellis bit, sra, sesdrop, i24k, parity activation and so on (Broadcom models).

So i'll try that and see if it helps me.

Just some feedback, flashed my router with above mentioend firmware and i can now control the SNR margin [i.e. you can set it to ensure it is a certain value]. So i pushed it up to be in the 8-11db range and then it syncs at about 2720kbps which seems more stable.

My line usually drops when my SNR goes below 6db .

Now i guess i'll have to see if it works.

I think the other routers might have similar settings by default.

I think I found my problem!

By plugging my router directly into the wall socket, instead of in a 15m cable that goes to where my router currently is, I managed to get serious improvements!

Upstream512 kbps
Downstream
3072 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream)
8.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream)
18.0 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream)
29.0 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream)
54.5 db

Ok so just out of irnterest it would appear the extension was not my problem.

Line dropped 14 times on Friday night (2/26/2010)

Saterday morning same story. Agent at 0800 DSL DSL tried to convince me that it was because I am using an unshaped account.

Come one, are you kidding me?

Anycase, got my SMS to say telkom engineer would be out today, but still no luck 11:08am....
