ADSL unbundling will happen eventually

what is that is all you can afford to pay per month for internet?

The author might have a point, and I would be willing to agree with him. IF, and only IF, I was sitting at home happily downloading a movie (yes legally) on a 4mbs line, at a speed of 4mbps, with no worries about what protocol to use to get that speed, what application to use or not use, no worries about reaching a cap or being throttled or shaped into oblivion. Then only I would be content to say: Yes, we have indeed made some progress over the past EIGHT years. We are not talking about landing a craft on Mars here for pete's sake, we are talking about internet access...

Well written article, but lacking substance.
On the contrary, the article was very badly written. I have great respect for people who communicate in their second language, but this was not a forum post, it was an official article on a respected website. As such, the author should at a minimum get someone to proofread and take out the glaringly bad grammar and incorrect word useage ("crowing for" instead of "clamouring for"; "clamouring over themselves" instead of "falling over themselves"; "the most hardcore among us is", etc.).

Russel, I largely agree with your thinking, but please get someone to do some editing for you next time.

Fritz

Erm....how much of the article was about unbundling?????

And it’s because we, as the South African internet consumer, are a very tough bunch to please

Dammit are you for real????

As for the speed, well 384K is still a darn sight faster than dial-up!

yeah that maybe technically true but what a retarded statement!
How about looking at it this way.."As for the speed, well 384K is still a darn sight slower than 4,10 or even 24Mbps!!

Russell stick to writing some useless knitting articles:cry:

We won't see LLU - the ANC said they'd rule forever and I'm pretty sure Malema will see the last mile as a national asset.

Its such a pity that mobile internet cannot be cheaper. Its a shame how our service providers take us for a ride and nogal for years ekse.I mean R189 for 500 mb...etc.It just keep on getting worst as the data bundles go up.

imho a good article which most seem to be missing the point of
take a deep breath and appreciate that - while we have a long way to go - we have come a long way

Unbundling won't be as good as you think it is.. Once unbundled, you will end up having to be in a 1 year plus contract with your provider. As it is now, you can change your provider every 10 minutes as long as you have an account somewhere else. Imagine a cell phone that is network locked, you can't slap in another provider's SIM card and call. It will be the same thing.

Sometimes, you can understand the position of the internet providers in SA. Sometimes, you can even feel quite sorry for them in fact. And it’s because we, as the South African internet consumer, are a very tough bunch to please.

No we're not. And I don't feel sorry for them at all. They have been smoking us for way too long.
While the rest of the world had cheap and fast internet they saw an opportunity to wring every last cent from us for the privilege to be online.
Charging by the gig instead of flat rate line speed, hiding their duplicity behind complicated products, uncapped which turns out not to be.
If one ISP can charge in the order of R20/gig there is no justification for others to still charge R90. Except greed of course.
Telkom through our wonderful government has been allowed to milk their monopolistic position for about 10 years too long.
Vodacom (wireless I know) for instance still hasn't passed on any meaningful savings resulting from cheaper wholesale Seacom/SAT3 prices.

Feel sorry for them. Not quite! They can rot in hell for all I care.

You have a point there--I never looked it that way. What this will open up to is Price Fixing, like we are used to so far with other products. ***'ed if you do and ***'ed if you don't.

isps will start building their own last mile as well... why would they want telkom's dodgy old copper lines if they can put down their own copper/fiber network?
