ADSL upgrades: what if you cannot get 10Mbps?

A few things have happened and will be happening in your area. They have provided more backhaul to your exchange... see if you can be moved onto a DSLAM port that is provisioned by a metro-ethernet link(recently installed) instead of an ATM link.

Depending on which side of Welcome Road you live, you could be cutover to an ISAM (the French version of the Huawei MSAN) very soon and be moved over to the Charlo exchange.

Stuck on 2Mbps with a 4\10Mbps line for the last +-5 years now. Telkom has not even tried to improve their infrastructure around here (Bromhof). Since my area is served by a mini-DSLAM that's >5km away the MSAN they will eventually replace it with will also be 5km away and I'll still be stuck on 2Mbps (or maybe worse).

Does anybody know if the MSANs at least still sync with G.DMT or are they ADSL2+ now? In which case I will probably have to kiss my ADSL line goodbye.

What percentage of ADSL subscribers have actually benefitted from this at all yet?
Maybe they don't want to actually release the figures because they are so paltry.

The net effect of all these announced upgrades appears to be insignificant.

I'm guessing I'm the wrong side to be joined with Charlo - the Jeffrey's Bay side. Last Telkom techie who was around here a few months ago said he was surprised we even got 4Mbps.
 
I have a 21.6Mbps attainable rate.

I think Telkom are slowly but surely pulling finger, good on them.

Worth noting that it pays to know someone who works for Telkom. Someone who can just make changes for you without going through the "official channels".

Im connected to http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/WSP+05 and happily on 10Mb. Yes, Im close to the exchange so in that regard I am fortunate.

If you dont live close to an exchange, one needs to manage their expectations. Nothing pisses me off more than someone living 5km from their exchange and they cry about not having 10mb ;)

There are plenty who have been moved over to MSAN/ISAM nodes and either don't know it (poor communication) or they don't want a VDSL service (cost?).
 
Strange, when I use ADSL checker from the Telkom website for my parents line who stay in Rayton, it says that line supports up to 1mpbs and that the current speed is 2mbps. This is confusing. And I have no idea why they don't upgrade the line to 4mbps?

For how long is "managing their expectations" feasible though? I was relatively content with my 59dB attenuation for about 3 years - now, it's just starting to piss me off. I've been paying for POTS & ADSL for quite some time now and the only thing that has happened is that the ADSL has gotten more unstable. But that's the awesome thing for a monopoly - they can be miserably mediocre and I still have to pay them for the dregs they provide.
 
I'm one of those that could only sync at about 6mb, but the noise ratios were so bad, I downgraded back to 4mb :(

Maybe upgrade your ISP? Afrihost seems to have an answer centre, rather than just a call centre.

yeah I hear what you are saying. I was on Telkom's case when the whole congestion thing started in 2011. Or was it 2010 flip I cant remember anymore... Anyway, I had some run-in's with Senior Telkom staff in Pretoria over Telecon, it was interesting times.

Things are better now, but I hear what you saying.

Some people are stuck with crap lines and they will probably have them till the DA takes over ;)

Hi MickeyD,

My exchange is only capable of 4Mbps (012 662), and when my line was recently upgraded from 2Mbps to 4Mbps I could only sync at 3Mbps. The Telkom technician told me that there is a line fault between the kerb connection and my house, but because 3Mbps is acceptable as best effort service on a 4Mbps connection they're not likely to fix it.

He also mentions that the exchange is due for an upgrade "early" in 2014. Could you please check if that is the case? I would really appreciate some good news in this regard...
 
ADSL subscribers who have not been upgraded to 10Mbps and are looking for higher speeds may be encouraged to know that this may happen in future.

Been on 4mb since I've had adsl, since 2007 I think, also still waiting for 10mb, lets not even mention 20/40mb (even tho I've put my name on the meaningless list), so like another forumite said, I won't hold my breath anytime soon.

I live in PvR and my line syncs at 10Mbit. ADSL checker also reports that 10Mbit is available if I use my number.

I tried a few numbers of businesses in the area and some report 10Mbit whilst others report 4Mbit.

Wonder why the inconsistency (two exchanges in pvr?)
