ADSL usage per-ip tracking

Guys, i hope somebody can help out there. We have a 6gb mweb adsl connection at our office, and has been hit hard the last two days with 2gb downloads on the one day and another gb on the next. Nobody at the office has bee downloading, so my only choice is spyware.

Is there a way to track usage from each computer? I know there is ways to check your total usage, but i need a way to find out what each pc / ip is using. We have a netgear DG834 ADSL v2 router, and are sharing the connection using ccproxy.


Please your help will be appreciated.

You ever think that someone else has your adsl login details? Cause id love to know what spyware you have that runs up 2gigs a day...
 
Download the SASA bandwidth monitor, search this forum, and use it.

Then, if there are any concurrent sessions, BANG !!! Somebody else has your details and is using them.

You will see what I mean.
 
It is important that you keep tight control over your downloads. I suggest you monitor your downloads with netmeter. It is a free program and very nifty!
 
Thx for the help so far. Will try to change my password if it will help, but according to saix stats analyzer i only have on concurrent connection for the whole month so far.
According to me that means that only one login was active all the time.
Will try the netmeter software, and report back.

PS.
We had another 1.4gb download yesterday. and yes our cap is gone. not nice working on dial up.
Please help anybody.

Sounds like an inside job... ;) If your uploads are also high then it's probably torrents or some other p2p app that's being used on the sly. Could even be people listening to online radio...

EDIT: Hang on, just had a thought. Maybe your ccproxy is allowing proxy connections in from the outside world...? You should make sure it only accepts local lan connections.
 
We had a virus / worm / spyware / something (unknown) on one of our PC's which kept on downloading 200MB's of data every few minutes, causing our 10GB account to be capped in the first week as well. On my router I could see that particular PC was eating a lot of bandwidth, yet nothing could clean it. We ended up reinstalling Windows XP (which IMO is the real virus), and our ADSL was just fine afterwards.

Guys. thanks for all the nice tips. hope this thread will help somebody in the future. I Installed net limiter on all the pc's, and voila i found the culprit. Some of the guys installed Ypops on the pc's, which allowed them to downlaod yahoo mail via pop3, without paying for it.
On one pc the ypops kept downloading the same mail over and over, and if you close the outlook it kept running in the background. average usage was about a meg a minute, which explained our problem completely.

I've said it once. an i'll say it again. Mikrotik RouterOS is a great piece of OS to use in this case.

You can give every user a login/pass. Bind that to the user's mac addy. Then you can nicely set limits on their accounts.

Works like a charm.
We had a similar problem when we started our little lan. Somebody on the network was munching our 30gb cap almost at a rate of 1.5-2gb a day.
The only way we could get the culprit was to install mikrotik on one of our reaaaly old pc's.

Now we can see immediately who's doing what on the network, who's sucking the net dry, and it's got a good firewall.
