Advice on purchasing a Porsche

That's also just the opinion of a guy. I see both of them as people who provide entertainment. I find his drifting of everything completely pointless and annoying. :)
 
All I can add is.. if you buy a Porsche, make sure you have maintenance plan attached to it for a good while!

Can't say I trust that man on anything.. He is highly entertaining but that's pretty much where it stops for me.

Not needed these cars are built like tractors... Super reliable... I've never heard of any friends or experienced issues with these cars... The only thing that does go quick are the clutches... But that's wear and tear and ceramics on older models were troublesome. Electronics are finicky, as in your pcm unit might never come on or freeze if say you attempt to play an mp3 file with strange characters in it :).. And the release catches for the front and rear trunk becomes sticky... But never engine issues or gearbox issues with these cars

On the subject of Porsche, the thing with a Cayman is that although they look good, you'll get guys cheaper cars pulling away from you at traffic lights as the hot hatches encroach on the Porsche territory.

Yes, it is a Porsche and does look great, but I think your ego is slightly deflated having the Golf R getting ahead of you and there's nothing you can do.

Might just be me, but I never thought of buying a Porsche so I can race it at robots :o

You own a Porsche, because it's a Porsche
 
You'll buy it for the name only?

I find that odd really ;) It's a got a racing heritage behind it and most people buy it for some spirited driving

I think if you're buying a Cayman you're already aware that you're not getting a robot racer and won't pull lamp poles on the current upper level of hot hatches. That being said I'd take a Cayman over a Golf R any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

When you really break it down the Golf R is an incredible piece of machinery, but it's still a Golf and nothing will change that.

Everyone wants to race with a good launch.
Thing is I'll avoid trying to race with someone I think has a faster car.

But in reality the oke driving the golf R will still be jealous of you seeing you in his rear view mirror.

Thing is I bumped into a Cayman S on Sunday that really thought he was the quickest thing on the road - and drove like it. I've always liked the Cayman and would take it as well, price dependent. I even saw a Boxster I'd love to own ... but not at the price.

For the price Porsches go for I would much rather buy a GT-R if I want a racer :p

It's like people buying name brand shoes instead of cheap shoes. You get value for money, unless it bursts into flames for no reason :D

I'd drive a Cayman like I stole it, and when I line up at the lights with a Golf R and he leaves me wanting, I'll pull into the petrol station behind him, get out and chat cars with a fellow petrol head. Although I'm sure there are some trust fund kiddies out there who have a Porsche on daddy's account thinking they own the world. That's why it's good having the Golf R/M135 etc to put them in their place from time to time. :p

Ah totally agree with you if that happens.

Years back I stopped next to a (unbeknown to me) KO4 Golf 5 GTI that slaughtered me. Waved him down at the next light and we pulled off at the next garage to chat about cars, what he'd done etc.

But this particular guy didn't want to stop next to me at all - he sped up to get through the traffic light to avoid me. At the next light when he turned off, he once again drove it like he stole it as there was no competition around him.

These guys are only human and it doesn't feel great when another car is quicker, even if you do have the Porsche. I remember my stepdad had just bought a 996 Carrera 4 and was super happy and proud. Took me for a spin and chatted about the torque and power ... and at the moment he put his foot down to show me, a Suburu stationwagon type thing went quicker.

I could see my stepdad wasn't too chuffed

Nope, you get a sports car for the feel that you get when driving it. As somebody else said, a simple thing like sitting low down can be a game changer when it comes to providing you with a driver's experience... :p
