Afrihost 4096 uncapped offering user experiences

Left a download running last night (throttled to 40kbytes/s), just checked and now it's averaging about 300kbytes/s. So, thanks for that.

I'm only at 66GB this month, so hopefully this improved speed lasts a while longer.

[email protected] so I guess that means I'm still being screwed, I mean 'managed'. Actually I don't care anymore, my account will be terminated the end of december.

This is part of an e-mail Afrihost sent way back in June (attached below), so it p**sed of allot of people (including me) cause we got throttled to around 40kb/s when we were paying for a 4meg account, then in August they sent out another e-mail to all the heavy users that stated; we have been moved directly onto the IS backbone and we'll be managed by them. So after the move my line speed has been good, but ja I'll agree with you they really screwed with us... but f*** it's really tiring to move accounts all the time and I'll admit I was going to cancel my account but then the IS thing came into play and I gave it another month and ja it worked out nicely. Well so far at least....

Please note that our Uncapped ADSL terms of service
and the way we manage these packages will be changing
from the 1st of July.

Our uncapped accounts will be managed each day on an
hourly basis depending on the capacity available on our
network at that time.

Why are we making this change?

We have a certain capacity available on our ADSL network
for all of our Capped and Uncapped ADSL clients - If the
network is congested and slow at any time we will dynamically
manage our biggest uncapped users to ensure the best
experience for all clients across our network.

How will we do this?

We monitor our overall network usage on an hour to hour basis
and if our capacity is stretched we will dynamically shape and
throttle certain clients' uncapped accounts to relieve congestion.
These uncapped clients will be chosen based on their historic
bandwidth usage.

That explains a lot. I never got these e-mails as I only signed up at the end of October.

Despite my ranting, I have to admit that the last day or two my account has been running at line rate most of the time. So kudos to Afrihost, looks like things are improving, at least from my point-of-view.
