Hi

Have been experiencing this for the past week.

The network status on Afrihost website says all is just fine.

However monitoring the network with Pingplotter shows a totally different picture for pings from Cape Town area.

Pings show hops to www.afrihost.co.za are as high a 670 ms per hop.:wtf:

And it appears to happen in waves....a few minutes all is fine - the next moment it all goes to the dogs again

I see MWEB servers in their network mix also.

197-81-226-77.jhb.mweb.co.za

Anyone having the same issues. The average is 210 per hop from 169-0-44-1.ip.afrihost.co.za onward.

And then there are these crazy spikes.

This more likely a line issue or a machine on your network which has Malware or torrents going.

Well for starters its not www.afrihost.co.za, its: www.afrihost.com.
And its best to post your issues here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/776612-Afrihost-New-Network-Feedback
You will get a faster response :)

insane latency.

Sorry to hear about the issues here :(
Definitely not that amount of latency coming in from our end.

I can't seem to see your attachment though - mind pasting up a traceroute? This will show which hop is introducing the unwanted latency.

As for the MAMPARALANGAn comment as you can see from the tracert it is actually www.afrihost.co.za with server IP 169.0.44.1 ;)

Its still very much a mess - can't even use live chat on afrihost to resolve issue - and smtp time's out because of the DNS route problems. SO mail is down also.

Have tried using google public DNS instead of afrihost primary and secondary - without any resolve.

DSL is not capped, no torrent software, telkom has reset all ports on line - made no difference.

To access my server just a few km from here in the Newlands CPT datacentre....hops average between 865ms and 1384ms per hop , if they don't time out completely on 8 hops beyond the router on this end.

From these results it looks like an exchange issue. You're also on older Telkom hardware in the area :(
That 2nd hop is your exchange and shouldn't see such high latency.

What happens if you use the Telkom guest account or another ISP? If the results are replicated, it'll confirm an exchange issue.

Hi - thanks for trying to help - latency comes down with 2/3rds when using Telkom guest account test.

I've logged a fault call with Telkom also - but its clear from the DNS routing that beyond the exchange things are not much better along the route. Unlikely that its due to exchange congestion all of a sudden.

But I'm not a happy customer right now... and the problem isnt related to the equipment on the premises - but either ISP related or telkom line infrastructure has gone for a total wobbly in CPT.

If there's latency being introduced on your exchange it'll reflect across the entire traceroute.
Can you post the results from the guest account or from another ISP?

This isn't a CPT wide issue, we'd have a lot more clients querying this otherwise :)

And suddenly....all works again. So somewhere out there someone broke something in the infrastructure. Was interesting to see where the bottlenecks remained on the DNS routing until it was fixed. :)

The slowest (consistently slow) hop is 169.1.5.105 ( cpt-up1.ip.adsl.co.za) at the moment - monitoring the account using pingplotter pro.

Glad you're seeing the results normalise.
As you saw similar issues using another account it will point to an exchange issue - DNS resolves won't help improve things here I'm afraid.

Was an app/ OS not maybe updating something in the background? This can also cause high latency to your exchange as it saturates your line.

Odd results.
What happened when you ran a ping to that hop?

Afrihost/Telkom Hop 2

Hi there. Bellville North DSLAM. I have intermittent HOP 2 breaks past few days. See traceroute image.
I have my DSL line with Afrihost, support tickets and images sent through, amazingly NO RESPONSE yet.
Currently using cellular data for essential data.

Hi

Can't see much wrong here from this traceroute, although it looks like you're using an IS based account for this test?
Just a quick heads up - could you post your replies over in our network feedback thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ack-Part-2?p=17673526&viewfull=1#post17673526 Makes tracking things easier and we're always active there :)
