has anyone else had this problem or is it my system?

as soon as i use torrents on my afrihost account my bandwidth disappears in hours/days.

I have a 384k line and started some torrents last night. In 24 hours i've downloaded 2560mb and uploaded 485mb according to afrihost. According to my torrent manager I've downloaded 324mb and uploaded about 50mb. I have my speed throttled to 28k down and 2k up (to leave some bandwidth for email) and it isn't running off my computer - it's running off a torrent application on my network storage.

Prior to starting the torrent my usage was normal - no problems.

Is it just me or are other people experiencing this? It happened last month as well.

it's 5gb, as soon as boardband is cheaper i'll up the upload :o

Thats strange, check that you don't have too many hashfails - broken or error file chunks, else your torrent manager DL's those chunks again, costing your plenty bandwidth.

4gig in 24 hr is very optimistic on a 384kb line, I get maybe 2gig in 24hr if I'm lucky! (on my 384 line)

Hey Owen

Gian asked me to look into your query from the pm.

There is nothing on the system that we are aware of in terms of torrents being limited. I used the account at home and I never have problems with Torrentz and I am always downloading.

Could it not be an issue with there not being enough peers on the Torrent Network? Maybe these files you are trying to download are rare. Have you setup your router to allows torrent incoming and outgoing connections. I know with uTorrent there is an exclamation mark (either green or red) when the router has not been setup correctly.

Also remember the download speeds do fluctuate based on when the users overseas are online.

Please note that your download speed should only reach a max of 38.7 or so kb/s and that also depends on

a) Users being online
b) line not being used for anything else
c) Many users having the torrent.

I hope this info helps.

If not email me on [email protected] and we can take it further.

Moshe

having a 2k upload will cause you to upload more in the end, as your downloads get throttled as well.

usually it's just better to open the taps and get your download done and dusted, instead of uploading/downloading for days...

I think you missed his point Moshe. He's complaining about the usage amount, not the flow. His t manager says one thing and his host account another.

Could be other devices or software using his internet that he's not aware of. Or in most cases, another family member :D

Only thing I can think of is hashfails..

Alternatively install some sort of bandwidth monitor as well for extra monitoring.

Kosmik is right - my issue isn't the speed, it's the amount of data used. I'm limited to about 40k/s on a 384 line regardless of any machine or device on my network.

Someone more technical can correct me but by my calculations 40kbit/s = 40.60.60kbit/hour = 40.60.60.24kbits/day = (40.60.60.24)/8192mb/day = 432mb/day? At anyrate it's far off 2.9gb. I topped up with 4gb last night and now I'm sitting at 900mb left. This R29 internet is working out far more expensive than anyother internet service I've use so far.

You can request data usage from your ISP and the telkom port that it came off of. I haven't bothered crunching your numbers but if you don't beleive it possible to actually get that much throughput ( and sustaining full line speed is actually quite difficult ) then the isp must prove it.

You could be a victim of account theft.

Although @ 40KB a sec, you get 2.4Mb a minute , 144Mb an hour and a possibility of 3.456Gb a day.

Remember, your line is 384Kb ( Kilobits ) with maybe a throughput of 40KB ( KiloBytes ) per second.

kosmik is right again - i made a mistake with my numbers, divided by 8 twice but as he says it probably is very unlikely that i get a full 40k/s for 24hours especially as i limit the down and upload.
