Must say since last night my ping and packet loss looks a lot better.Ping is not the lowest its ever been but it is stable.
 
I know that feeling. Needed github for windows. 5pm-7pm was me sitting and retrying every time the download failed

That definitely should not be your experience on a Business Uncapped account, how are you speeds outside of the period you mentioned?

Are you seeing any increases in latency as well?

Thanks for the update! I'm glad to see that there is an improvement! I am sure you will continue to see even further improvements over the coming days.
 
speeds are slowing down again as the day gets later and more people get on the internet
and now it just went down the crapper again

We're looking quite okay in the South at the moment, what sort of speeds are you seeing at the moment?

This is the usual, everything all over the place and when it gives "request timed out" nothing can be done.
 
Ok so after all of this I went the wireless route. They were at my house earlier today and installed for me.


Keeping my Telkom line and ADSL but will be keeping an eye on this...

With whom is this? Is it fully unshaped/uncapped? I would like to switch, but like-for-like, not something that will throttle me when I need it most.

This is with Sonic Wireless.
Not sure if they operate in JHB. P2P is shaped from 7am till 7pm. Weekends it is unshaped.
Streaming etc is absolutely flawless, gaming is amazing. I am happy.

Edit: You do get a fully unshaped package with a 5:1 Contention Ratio.

Honestly, that latency spikes that you experience when someone is streaming from Youtube on your network could be caused by a number of factors. How many devices are connecting to the modem? Are these devices using WiFi or LAN? Are you seeing something similar happen with other services?

It happens on all devices but it seems worse on LAN connected devices. As for number of devices we looking at 2 LAN connected and about 3 WiFi ones. I personally suspect YouTube has been given highest priority from your guys end if this is even possible. A friend suggested it was shaping of some sort but the issue has persisted since I upgraded to business.

Update: Twitch seems less effected but it yields similar spikes. Asked a friend to do some testing with his account and his ping doesn't exceed 30-40 ms on YouTube. This is not a case of a strained network as a single device connected still yields the ping spikes. The moment the video reaches the end of its buffering, ping goes down to a constant 10 m.s

I just thought of this, can you run a traceroute to Afrihost.com with a Youtube video playing / buffering, then another traceroute without Youtube running, this should then show us exactly where the latency is creeping in.

That's not good at all, those are definitely worrisome results.

Could you run a traceroute to Afrihost.com and then Google.com, I'm pretty sure the latency is causing the significant drop in speed.

So now traceroute and Speedtest are normal again, but streaming still cowdung. :mad:

Actually, there's always 1 of the hops that has a delay on 1 of the 3 pings, see highlighted.
