Apologies! Seems that I typed out a reply, saved it, but never actually sent it. :(

Honestly, that latency spikes that you experience when someone is streaming from Youtube on your network could be caused by a number of factors. How many devices are connecting to the modem? Are these devices using WiFi or LAN? Are you seeing something similar happen with other services?

@AfriGenie

It happens on all devices but it seems worse on LAN connected devices. As for number of devices we looking at 2 LAN connected and about 3 WiFi ones. I personally suspect YouTube has been given highest priority from your guys end if this is even possible. A friend suggested it was shaping of some sort but the issue has persisted since I upgraded to business.

I just thought of this, can you run a traceroute to Afrihost.com with a Youtube video playing / buffering, then another traceroute without Youtube running, this should then show us exactly where the latency is creeping in.

Wow...

That's quite a big difference... What worries me is that you're seeing such a jump in latency from the second hop, which is the connection between your ADSL modem and the Telkom Exchange.

That would probably explain why the latency remained when you upgraded your account. Just to confirm, you are getting this consistently at all times of the day?

No matter the time of day, If a video starts playing this is what the ping does. For several months I'll add.

It seems like your line is being saturated really easily. Do you have any form of QoS on your end?

No my router does not support any sort of QoS but I can assure you its not router related as I've been through 3 different routers since this issue started and one of the routers did have some sort of QoS and it changed nothing.

Pardon my ignorance, but shouldn't a line get saturated when it's sending a lot of data per second?

Also, have you thought of anything I could do to resolve my streaming problems I reported here with tests last night? Overall line speed improved to normal, as I posted here, but streaming still broken.

Hhmm, OK.
And it's only streaming that does this? Any other devices hooked up at the time of testing?

It does indeed. Lots of concurrent connections is the easiest way to get it done. Dropbox is a good example, if you upload something the latency goes crazy.

Could you shoot me a PM with your info a few tests please?

No I made sure at the time the only device connected was my PC via LAN and yes it appears to be only streaming.

download speeds are down the crapper again
looks like throttling or shaping

Thought it was just me. Not completely down but about half normal speed. Have just installed windows on new drive so will keep testing today and see if it continues.
