I'd like to have this looked into a bit more, could you PM me the finer details please?
I'll have this passed onto our team to run some tests.
You mean like tracert's?

Glad am I to read I am not the only one with MySQL problems! I have not been able to access my databases for days. I understand torrent speeds taking a dive when there are issues, but when my business is affected, my patience wears thin. Have to add though, today was better.
I've switch over to a WA business test account. Been testing & working most of the day over SSH for MySQL & BASH. Been FTP'ing files alot, skyped a little, downloaded the odd file, surfed, email via Gmail, streamed full HD 1080P via Youtube(no buffering)... while the support staff have been busy with their normal operations... not one glitch in the matrix.
IMHO, Afrihost's 'business' uncapped product no longer supports a true business user the way it should. With alot of people downloading P2P torrent content over their business accounts it's going to eventually start causing havoc... the exact point they've reached. WA's business account is shaped against P2P during peak business hours, but that's perfectly fine with me. I need a stable business product that caters for business protocols, not heavy downloaders and p2p'ers!
Honestly I cannot see how AH are going to clean up this mess, without losing subscribers. We're leaving...
I'm really sorry to hear that you're leaving
I have full confidence in our team that we'll come out of this a better ISP, and a wiser ISP.
Contention ratios are always hard to nail down accurately, they're always changing.
Edit: Contention ratios can only really be truly guarateneed on something like leased lines.
I think you should really stick to asking people for traceroutes and making non-technical statements.
A contention ratio is the ratio of YOUR TOTAL BANDWIDTH in relation to YOUR SOLD BANDWIDTH. ie. You sell 5mbps of capacity for every 1mbps of actual available bandwidth (5:1) in the hope that all customers who have signed up don't demand the capacity simultaneously or make use of services which don't require realtime bandwidth. It has nothing to specifically do with leased lines but actual demand for a finite resource.
It does change though, the contention ratio is probably higher during peak times as opposed to 3am in the morning. Surely the amount of clients we have vs our capacity is a bit of a different metric?
No, Contention is the MAXIMUM possible demand vs ACTUAL total capacity (FINITE). You are referring to current demand vs available capacity as a metric. They are two very different things. The purpose of a contention ratio is to provide an indication to a user of a minimum statistically guaranteed service level/speed.
I know my suggestion is going to get me flamed, but why can't AH request people to supply a valid company reg no. and/or vat number on sign-up. That will reduce the uptake from non-business users and allow the product to perform properly for those it was intended for! This is exactly what Telkom and WebAfrica do for their business accounts.
DSL Status
Our DSL Broadband network is running like a bomb! Everything is copacetic and we’re good to GO!
Then AH should offer an unshaped / uncapped product and call it Fred or AH Gold Afriman Edition or whatever at a higher price than the standard account for people who want, and are willing to PAY for this functionality?
HTTP running blissfully. P2P literally non-existent -- like... disabled.
So the network is fine nationally?

Didn't that already happen? It was called Afrihost Business Uncapped.
