There is definitely an issue at the moment, and our Team is working on getting everything back to normal. I'm not sure what else you expect me to say or do?

With regards to gratitude, that is entirely up to you, we provide you with a service, and it is our responsibility to provide you with the service that you need.

The management system Afrihost uses seems to be inferior, why not dump you vendor and look for a company that can provide a working system? Before you have no customers.... Just a thought.

All options are being considered. :P

I certainly hope it won't have to be anything as drastic!

I think you may have to revise that a bit....It is your responsibility to provide us with the service we PAY for, not need.....
What service you may deem that I need and the service I pay for can be two totally different things....

"No shaping being applied" ... sure looks like it is being applied to me. 6 Mbps Business Uncapped account:

What is the point of having a Network Status Page? I mean even in almost total failure it shows everything is fine, when in fact it's the complete opposite.

Definitely no general issues this evening, I'm assuming there's the same Telkom/ MTN issue on the DSLAM?

Afriguy, whats the latest status? I just started watching youtube videos, and same experience as this morning. Seems more popularly viewed videos are downloading at full speed, but as soon as I venture towards videos that might not been cached, buffering of more than a MINUTE happens on my 20 meg VDSL line.

Well with all the load shedding taking place, I doubt all your users can even log on, so no great test of the network.

Load shedding definitely affects overall demand to a massive degree. I would agree that testing during loadshedding is not a reflection of overall network performance. We do notice that we can shape uncapped accounts a lot less, as demand definitely drops, depending on the time and areas affected.

It's possible that when you are watching popular content it's cached locally on on our Google nodes, which means the content would be very quickly accessible via our network. Other content may be cached overseas and that will depend if it's in the UK, or the US (east or west coast) and that would affect the overall experience.

Ok? So then there must be a problem with the international bandwidth?

Not necessarily. It would depend on where the video content is served from, the compression used on the video and the quality of the video playback. What we do find is that content that requires extensive routing through multiple networks can be a bit slower, but doesn't necessarily mean that bandwidth is inadequate - depends on the quality of the networks (especially for some US based content)

Fair enough. Makes sense if you are using a proxy of some sort.

I'm referring to youtube video's though. My DNS is set to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - No Unotelly, etc. So armed with this knowledge, having a 20meg VDSL connection, struggling to get decent youtube video playback on non cached videos, suggests to me that the international leg of the transfer is to be blamed here. Do you agree?

Not really. Using Google's DNS will affect where you are directed to get content in some cases. The trouble with YouTube is we can't really tell where you are getting the content from. It could be the US or Outer Mongolia. So I think the best is to look at the throughput your line is pulling (try using stats for nerds) and see if your general throughput to any international sites that you can traceroute with a reasonable idea of where the servers are reflects the same type of throughput. I know that our international links are not saturated at the moment, so I wouldn't expect that to be the issue right now.
