Good Morning Guys

Before I reply to individual posts, I just want to let you know that we are aware of the Yosemite release this morning and we'll be monitoring very closely. The download is around 5GB and we're not sure how much this will impact us since we haven not as yet received our IPC upgrade.

We'll be working closely with MTN throughout the day should we see any direct effect on performance. I'd also like to humbly request than any Mac users hold off on downloading the OS during peak if possible and schedule their download when the network is quieter, this will really help all of us get a better experience.

Have an awesome Friday :)

Jip, mine went down the poop shoot at about 7:00, just when I wanted to start work.

Thanks, that makes a world of sense. Maybe try communicate to the support gents and ladies that it would be much better to mention the IPC issue and then try everything else to help.

I wasted buckets of time thinking my issue was isolated but now I can set my clock to the rhythm of the contention. Yet the call centre still insists that the network is copacetic.

We'll definitely put some focus on trying to make sure our support guys make use of the info provided and stick to the facts in all their responses. This is an ongoing Quality Assurance process, and I know that we've added more resources to make this a bigger priority within the company.

I cannot find a single official announcement by Afrihost of IPC issues and immanent resolution... not one on Facebook, Twitter nor on Google+.

I see a rehash of mybroadband replies to individual comments on Facebook... but nothing official directly addressing IPC upgrades...

Yes, you have answered individual questions with the same song and dance seen here... but one has to scroll down and reveal these "convos"... there is nothing officially blillboarded anywhere.

I cannot factor in a reason to not make an official announcement other than self-protection of your Afrihost brand / image and the convenience of ignorance.

It is more of an Afrihost priority to officially announce to their clients a new iPad has been released rather than perhaps inform them that AH is optimising their network and poor speeds and related issues will continue for a while until the immanent IPC upgrades in affected areas of oversubscribed and unforeseen increase in bandwidth demand.

Actually it is just a covering your arse tactic. What the clients do not know does not harm you.
Delaying tactic.

But, it is pointless actually pursuing anything other than the official line of silence on this rubbish internet experience.

Ye gots ta drink the kool-aid and sing the hymns I guess.

/bah

I've already given some possible reasons, and at the end of the day I trust in management's decision to do what they feel best. I know that Gian understands our clients better than anyone, and he will know when is the appropriate time and the right message.

So who here has received an Afrihost mail, informing about the current issues? A dozen people I talk to daily are with Afrihost have issues and everyone has not received one of those magic mails. Just a saying...

I think the email I was referring to was support email. I actually know this because several emails we pasted in this and other threads where clients were informed that we knew about the issues with demand and that upgrades are imminent.

That's not too good. Let's hope the download frenzy for Yosemite hasn't started already, but we'll be monitoring closely throughout the day.

OMW - you are kidding us - right? Very soon you will alert us about Microsoft patch Tuesdays, that your network will suffer. This is really a joke and to be honest in my discussions with Amazon, Akamai, Cloudflare, Verizon CDN - all of which have local pops, but many of them struggle to get peering agreements into place with local ISPs. In any case, the previous excuse about "there are rights issues with regards what can and can not be cached" is equally non-sense as most of us know that other ISPs very aggressively cache and it is possible.

So my predictions for the next few weeks are:
- Yosemite will be used as an excuse for the weekend
- iOS 8.1 will be used for excuses for the rest of October
- Android 5.0 upgrade will be used for October/November

BTW: You should have really then also jumped onto Windows 10 tech preview causing issues - there is an opportunity you missed. (As well as the free U2 album everyone got)

I find those excuses laughable and if there is even a remote chance of it being serious, then you should really re-evaluate the strength of your network as it is obviously not well architected if a handful of software releases can cause your network to go down.

How other ISPs work is up to them. We work directly with Akamai and other CDN's (as in not in discussion, we have agreements and services in place), via MTN, so I'm relaying first hand information here. If you have knowledge from working directly in an ISP environment that conflicts with what I'm saying, I'd love to hear it so I can take the debate back to our network team.

Maybe then you should look at how IS is edge caching, or Neotel, or Telkom's peering agreement or the CDNs at Teraco - just saying.

Most of our technical team, as well as MTN's, have extensive experience in the ISP environment, many of them helped build the networks you're referencing here. Again, how other ISP work and the agreements they have in place (or don't) is up to them.

Sure.

Will post this evening as a response to this - maybe you are right,
Also, we had one hellava storm last night which may affect our ageing Telkom infrastructure....

Becuase demand is high, it's really hard for me to tell if there is unusually high traffic. Hopefully our IPC gets upgraded and we'll be able to tell better.

But please keep me updated. If there is a line issue, we'll get working on that straight away :(

Thanks - I am sure this is only a transient issue.

Regards to Afridog :p

This man speaks the gospel truth!
