If other downloads are slow this may be due to demand in the area.
Poor throughput may be seen due to an increase in demand.

And a speedtest I get

Demand has nothing to do with this.

Speedtest 18mbps, NNTP traffic 1kbps.

Come on. At least come out and say you are blocking by traffic type instead of making me waste time running tests.

I think this debate has been had many, many times, both in this thread and between you and I.
Throughput may be degraded due to high demand, upgrades are on the way.

Have a good evening.

Afriguy. You are again avoiding the obvious.

It is not possible for "DEMAND" to be the problem when a speedtest shows high throughput and high speed. NNTP cannot get more than 1kBps.

To play devils advovate here, is it not possible they're limiting NNTP to ensure availability on more important protocols? I use Astraweb too but in the event of issues I'd much rather have priority on regular HTTP,SSH and so on.

...and again.... high demand would affect ALL protocols, not just NNTP. The fact that AH's own news server is also limited PROVES that Afrihost IS limiting traffic by protocol - THAT is the purest definition of SHAPING....

...just admit it already!

PS. the age of an NZB would have NOTHING to do with throughput, unless it is on the absolute end (oldest) of the providers retention period.

I am saying that is exactly what they are doing. They are claiming not to. So I have to waste time running tests.

If they were at least honest enough to say they will be blocking NNTP traffic until they get capacity, then I it would be a different matter.

I am publicly calling them out for the blatant dishonesty.

Guys please, this thread is full of debate about what causes what, when and how.
It's been discussed ad nauseum - you're more than welcome to browse through the thread for answers.

PS. I asked about the age of the NZB as a first question, I know it will have nothing to do with the case we're talking about here.

Ah ok, well I haven't tested my Astraweb yet.. when my software install is done I'll throw something in the queue and see. I have usually 10 concurrent connections to the server to get the most out of it. Thnk I'm on the US SSL server.

Guys AfriGuy has already admitted that the allocated bandwidth for downloads is what is being constrained! That was posted almost a week ago. Their bandwidth is divided and allotted to different protocols. With things as they are they have merely shifted more bandwidth to maintain realtime services. They aren't in fact shaping downloads. They have in all likelihood, by their own admission, reduced the bandwidth availability. Ergo the little there is now cannot service all the downloads.

It's that simple. With inadequate capacity this is the only solution. What is worse...having a few pissed of downloaders or the majority user base unable to browse and stream?

So according to you AfriGuy, the reason requiem wouldn't be able to buy a BMW (I'm using a car analogy in case you didn't pick it up) wouldn't be because BMW is out of stock but because there is a high demand of all manufacturer's cars. However, there are plenty Toyotas available if anyone is interested...

PSA: iOS 8.1 has been released. Afrihost is prolly gonna blame everything on that for the next week or so.

It is you that keeps asking the SAME questions, and giving the SAME answers as the cause of slow throughput - that is the "ad nauseaum" part. The point I have made (many times in the thread you refer to), and am still making, is that in order to troubleshoot, you have once again made it sound like the client is doing something wrong. If you claim (after the fact) that demand is the reason, then all you should be asking for is a comparison of the AH account with another ISP account - THAT IS ALL. That proves without a shadow of a doubt where the fault lies, and where you should focus your fault-finding/troubleshooting advice. Giving the same re-hashed suggestions/comments is only going to infuriate MORE people on this forum. I think you STILL fail to realise that AH has not done itself any favours, and while I really respect and appreciate all your (Afri-people) efforts on this forum, it is quite counter-productive at this late stage to STILL be using the same song-and-dance routine.

It would be really nice if AH would for once outwardly say, "there is high demand, capacity is on the way, but we will be limiting NNT/P2P protcols until IPC is lit up" THE END

That would go a REALLY long way, and it would also help you guys (Afri-people) on this forum to NOT have to field the same questions over and over ;)

Yeah, but in the same breath has repeatedly said that they do not shape/optimise/prioritise on a "per protocol basis".... 'it's just that demand is high'...

You cannot claim one, then deny the other - that is the point, innit? ;)

This is what I'm getting it. People keep harping on shaping...it isn't shaping. Bandwidth availability is merely constrained. Technically they aren't shaping as that would imply an active rule. I'm on Tapatalk so cannot find AfriGuy's post where he categorically said that bandwidth for downloads is what is being constrained...as unfortunate as it is.

Listen. This is a crappy mess no matter which way you slice it. All of us would have appreciated an up front straight to the point answer and post sure, but they are here to do damage as PR control until the problems are resolved.

This is merely the most effective solution - for most, not all - until they can light up more cap.

For legitimate businesses I feel the most with these issues :(

wow.. afrihost are "peaking" tonight! at 48kb/s on a 8meg uncapped account. and this is a business application... on a business account..................................

Well, it's at least.. 10x faster than when MWEB had the Seacom outages :D

Refer to it as what you want shaping/throttling/constraining/bottlenecking/constipating/etc... it doesn't matter, fact of the matter is that Afrihost keeps saying they are not doing any of it even though a horde of their users keeps proving that they are. They are losing credibility faster than the local village bicycle claiming she isn't a sex worker. If they just owned up and admitted it to their clients then at least they'd know they aren't being taken for a ride.

No argument there. I agree completely.

By definition - An unshaped service has no prioritization of any traffic and operates on a "first come, first served" basis regardless of which protocol is used.

Therefore, Afrihost are shaping.
