Excuse my ingnorance, but what is jitter?
Thanks in advance
In the context of computer networks, jitter is the variation in latency as measured in the variability over time of the packet latency across a network. A network with constant latency has no variation (or jitter).[3] Packet jitter is expressed as an average of the deviation from the network mean latency. However, for this use, the term is imprecise. The standards-based term is "packet delay variation" (PDV).[4] PDV is an important quality of service factor in assessment of network performance.
In computer networking, packet delay variation (PDV) is the difference in end-to-end one-way delay between selected packets in a flow with any lost packets being ignored.[1] The effect is sometimes referred to as jitter, although the definition is an imprecise fit.
Seriously think im being shaped atm. I started downloading the latest geforce driver earlier, was going at a decent speed (208kb/s~) on a 2mb line and then all of a sudden half way through it dropped to 13-20kb/s. However speedtest is running fine.
EDIT:
Now its running at its normal speed, wtf nvm then lol.
Indeed, it's the same across the board for me.
Either way, it seems like quite a lengthy was of determining whether or not the exchange is congested. Interesting nonetheless![]()
I do not understand how this is a lengthy way to determine whether or not the exchange is congested, compared to being asked here for speedtests, traceroutes, comparisons between different ISP's, resetting the router etc. and then being told that there is no clear evidence that one ISP is performing better than another when the latency on the AH account is 3-5 times more than the other ISP. Then we are told that there is no clear evidence that ISP x with a latency of 50ms is outperforming AH with a latency of around 250ms.
Surely determining if the exchange is congested or not is a great way of pinpointing whether or not the fault lies with the ISP or exchange?
Just lost connection for a good few minutes in CPT it seems to be happening more and more often.
These ongoing problems are beyond fustrating:
Local test cpt to cpt
Last Result:
Download Speed: 4082 kbps (510.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 733 kbps (91.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 298 ms
Jitter: 13 ms

Less than half my paid for speed, very high latecy, Afrihost do you actually know what is going on on your network?

We do know that latency rises significantly during the period where there is high demand on the network. This pretty appears between 8pm and 10pm most nights, though we've seen a few nights where there has been no latency increase or it's much milder than other nights - when our team have managed to keep demand from Uncapped accounts in check.
I know all of this, but at the end of the day, I am not getting what I am paying for. These excuses have been going on for months. I am still having serious issues with Windows Update, and nothing gets done. I was given a test account and it has the same issues. As a loyal customer, I would expect far better.

Without pointing fingers or insinuating anything ..... I am through with tests and stuff ... I have come to accept that I have bad internet and thats that.
No matter what tests I do, what I say what I change ..... despite evidence to the contrary ... exchange congestion seems to be scapegoat for all ills .... so when my car breaks down ... I blame it on the exchange.
And try to get Telkom to do something .... well its impossible ....
Support say - we have logged multiple faults ... and even though the latency is bad ... the logging of a fault will make it all better.
I dont know .... I am just frustrated ....
As far as I am aware, even with high latency on the network you should be consistently connected. Does this only happen in the evenings or does it happen consistently throughout the day?
Seems to be evening bound mostly.
